Advocating for Play in Education & Closing the Digital Literacy Gap through Sports, Esports, and Data Analytics
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Evelyn Campbell, Ph.D. and UChicago Data Science Institute for graciously hosting Youth Sports Science Institute and Black Girls Code. Our students were deeply inspired by touring the campus and learning about the paths to becoming future data scientists and microbiologists. This summer, Youth Sports Science Institute is thrilled to offer programming through After School Matters, where students have been immersed in sports analytics and technology. Dr. Campbell's dedication to fostering the next generation of STEM leaders, through initiatives like Data4All, has had a profound impact on our students, equipping them with the knowledge and motivation to pursue their dreams. You Can Learn More About Dr. Campbell’s Data4All program Here: https://lnkd.in/gXZPnMXx #STEMEducation #FutureScientists #YouthEmpowerment #ThankYou #Data4All #AfterSchoolMatters

Big congratulations to our Hackathon champions! To ALL participants: thank you for taking on this complex challenge and showcasing your skills and passion. MS in Applied Data Science students and alumni were challenged to develop a language model using a diverse range of public data from academia, finance, and healthcare. Participants innovated their own retrieval, chatbot, or search systems using an open-source pre-trained Large Language Models or multimodal LLM's of their choice.

Thank you DataDotOrg for sharing how our Data Science for Social Impact program is harnessing data science to drive social change and set up our students for success!
“We have to show our students that there is real work you can do and real change you can make in this field. People come away with new networks and new relationships, and our hope is to set people on a really good career trajectory, as well.” David Uminsky is the executive director of the UChicago Data Science Institute, where the US Capacity Accelerator Network (#CAN) is showing the power of collaboration to drive social change and fuel purpose-driven careers. ➡️ Dive into our latest impact story to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gz7eK-zw California State University, Fresno, Californians For Pesticide Ref, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, Folasade Fanegan, Isaiah Gonzalez, Shana McDowell, Grace Simunek, Mario Banuelos, Rachel Levy, Amanda R. Congratulations Nicholas Liagridonis! We're proud of your achievements and are honored to have been a part of your data science journey. Best of luck with your future endeavors with the Sacramento Kings!
From the Research Lab to the Basketball Court: Nic’s Journey in Data Science When he first started at UChicago, Nicholas Liagridonis was thinking about a career in psychology research or neuroscience. To explore his interests, Nic got involved with the University of Chicago Memory Lab. During his time at the lab, Nic recruited study participants and coordinated the data collection process. This research assistantship made Nic realize that he really enjoyed working with large datasets. Excited by the academic and professional possibilities, Nic decided to change his major to Data Science. One career path in particular stood out to Nic. As a lifelong basketball fan, he was fascinated by sports analytics. He set a goal of finding a data job after graduation with an NBA basketball team. To achieve this goal, Nic worked hard both in and out of the classroom to build up his skills. In addition to a rigorous data science courseload, he secured an internship with the University of Chicago Men’s Basketball team. During his internship, Nic worked on a predictive modeling project where he analyzed data from footage of the team’s previous games to identify personalized strategies the players could use to improve. Nic also took advantage of the UChicago Data Science Institute’s Data Science Clinic Program, a project-based course where students work in teams to tackle a real-world project facilitated by partners in academia, industry, and social impact organizations. Nic’s team worked on a software optimization project for Argonne National Laboratory, where they used an ensemble algorithm to match project planning documents with safety procedures. After four years of hard work, Nic successfully secured a post-graduation business intelligence internship with an NBA basketball team, the Sacramento Kings. Congratulations Nic – we can’t wait to see where your career goes from here! “The Career Advancement program at UChicago was unbelievably helpful at all stages of my college tenure, from when I had no idea what I wanted to do, to when I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I couldn’t be more grateful for my time and everything I went through at the College, and Career Advancement in particular really helped me continually progress along the way.” #uchicago #career #datascience
