Qualified lawyers and mediators who are willing to represent modest-means clients at below-market rates.
About us
DC Refers was created to increase access to justice for persons of modest means in the District of Columbia. Many people in the District of Columbia earn too much to qualify for free legal services from a pro bono lawyer or nonprofit legal aid provider but do not earn enough to afford to pay the amount that most lawyers charge for legal services. People whose incomes fall between 200-400% of the federal poverty guidelines often have no good options for obtaining legal assistance. We seek to fill that justice gap. DC Refers is an online directory that connects experienced lawyers and mediators willing to offer affordable legal services to potential modest-means clients in areas such as family law, housing law, tax law, immigration, estate planning, probate, employment law, and other areas of need. DC Refers is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

DC Refers 2024 Summer Fundraising Challenge: On The Road to 10K! DC Refers is committed to increasing access to justice for moderate-income individuals in the District of Columbia. Many people with household incomes between 200-400% of the federal poverty guidelines (approximately $62,000-$124,000 for a family of four) struggle to obtain the legal assistance they need. They fall in a gap where they don’t qualify for free legal services but can’t afford to hire a lawyer. DC Refers fills this gap by providing an affordable network of lawyers and mediators. We offer an online directory of experienced, prescreened professionals who offer their services at reduced rates to those with moderate incomes. We’re accelerating, but the community’s needs are zooming past us! Last year, 741 people sought affordable legal assistance through our directory. Nearly half engaged a lawyer for advice, consultations, or full representation. We want to reach even more clients and enlist more lawyers and mediators. Your donations will help us spread the word throughout the city! Our Goal: Raise $10,000 by August 31, 2024 Here's how your donation can make a difference: 🚍 Help us Get on the Bus! – We aim to do more outreach such as putting DC Refers ads on city buses to reach more people. A bus ad costs about $6,000. Can you help our dream become reality? 🌐 Expand Our Lawyer & Mediator Outreach – We plan to use new online marketing campaigns and host virtual and in-person events to grow our directory. Will you help us expand our network? 📈 Learn Our Traffic Patterns – Better analytics tools will help us improve our website and user experience. Can you contribute to richer information and clearer insights? 🔄 Share the Road – Our open-source directory technology is customizable and replicable, making it easier for other cities to support legal needs. An investment in DC Refers has a multiplier effect. Will you help the low bono movement grow? Fuel our journey to reach new clients and directory members, upgrade our technology to drive more impact, and accelerate the low bono movement – please donate today! Your tax-deductible donation will bring access to justice to moderate-income people in DC! 👉 Donate online here: www.dcrefers.org/donate ✉️ Or send a check to: DC Refers 1629 K Street NW, Suite 300 Washington, DC 20006 Together, we can make a difference.
