Highlights from the Kelly Arriaga ELL Academy include: 🌱Seeds of Learning: K through 2nd graders gardened and grew their English skills. 📘Creative ELA: Kinder and 1st graders explored identity through art and literature. ⚽Kickstarting Confidence: 4th and 5th graders boosted socioemotional skills through soccer. 🥋Martial Arts: Students learned self-defense, discipline, and respect with Sensei Allan. 🪢Double Dutch: Reviving this classic activity, students improved coordination and teamwork. ----------- ¡Nos sentimos muy orgullosos de Kelly Arriaga y su equipo por su aparición en el boletín NYS TARC! Counseling In Schools (CIS) innovative work at Heritage High School in East Harlem is featured in a story on NY1 that describes the close and collaborative relationship that CIS and Heritage have nurtured for years. CIS Executive Director Kevin Dahill-Fuchel and Heritage Principal Dyanand Sugrim discuss how CIS rapidly responded with trauma counseling after a student was shot outside the school. “We provided a space to capture students’ voices. We provided a space for grieving. But then we also gave the students a charge: What can we do about this in our school, and what can we do about this outside of our school?” Sugrim explained. Counselors maintain a room where students are able to meet one-on-one with counselors, or in groups to talk things out. “That room has helped me find out so many things about myself that I didn't even know existed before, like also other issues that I've had before that I would just suppress and not really deal with because I wouldn't know how to deal with it, nor would I want to deal with it,” junior Adelyn Pointer said. Since the arrival of Principal Sugrim over a decade ago, the graduation rate at Heritage has grown from 62% to 82%, demonstrating that lifting student voices and developing responsive programs that stimulate the emotional and social wellbeing of entire school communities strengthen academic success. --------------- El trabajo innovador de Counseling In Schools (CIS) en Heritage High School de East Harlem fue protagonista en la historia de NY1, donde se habló de la estrecha colaboración que mantienen CIS y Heritage desde hace años.
