It's been a busy month at Consumer Direct Care Network (CDCN)! As we further CDCN's mission and vision of helping people live the lives they want in their homes and communities, we also pause for brief moments to get to know one another and appreciate the world around us. When our teams interact with each other more frequently, they break down perceived silos, better understand the resources available to them within our organization, and work more efficiently so we can support you to the best of our ability!

July is Disability Pride Month, and it's a cause for celebration! Our celebration includes feeling strong and proud about our disability history but also remaining vigilant about protecting and advancing equal rights and treatment for individuals with disabilities as we look down the road ahead. This year's theme is "We Want A Life Like Yours," which reflects the disability community's desire for life experiences that are too often denied. This month, we invite you to reflect on the people in your life and celebrate how they are thriving! Additionally, we invite you to reflect on ways you can help provide an answer or an opportunity for someone's dreams. Here are ways to show your pride and celebrate. Today, Consumer Direct Care Network (CDCN) commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Olmstead decision, one of the most important civil rights decisions for people with disabilities in our nation’s history! On June 22, 1999, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a historic ruling in Olmstead v. L.C. This case revolved around two women, Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, who had intellectual disabilities and were confined in a psychiatric hospital despite being deemed suitable for community-based care. The Court’s decision declared that the unjustified segregation of people with disabilities is a form of discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Why is this decision so important? 1. Empowerment and Independence: The Olmstead decision affirmed the right of individuals with disabilities to live in the community rather than being institutionalized. This ruling empowers people with disabilities to lead more independent, fulfilling lives integrated with family, friends, and the broader community. 2. Equality and Inclusion: The decision promotes equality and inclusion by recognizing that unnecessary segregation is discriminatory. It challenges stereotypes and acknowledges the capabilities and contributions of individuals with disabilities. 3. Policy and Funding Shifts: The Olmstead ruling has influenced policies and funding priorities, encouraging states to develop more community-based services and supports. This shift helps ensure that individuals receive care tailored to their needs in the least restrictive environment possible. 4. Ongoing Advocacy: The decision galvanized the disability rights movement, sparking continued advocacy for accessible, community-based services. It serves as a cornerstone for ongoing efforts to dismantle barriers and promote the rights of people with disabilities. As we celebrate this landmark decision, let’s honor the courage of Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, whose fight for justice has paved the way for countless others. The summer solstice is the day with the most light – The Longest Day. Today, people from around the world are raising awareness for the dark fight against Alzheimer’s disease, a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. For the first time, we have promising treatments that may improve the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. However, this is just the first step forward. Much research is still needed to treat the disease at any stage. Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom nationwide. Consumer Direct Care Network (CDCN) embraces recognizing Juneteenth and amplifying its importance in our nation’s history. On June 19, all CDCN offices are closed to allow our employees the opportunity to recognize the significance of Juneteenth within their communities. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring all enslaved people free. However, the proclamation could not be implemented in areas in the United States under Confederate control. In the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved peoples had to wait another two and a half years to learn of their emancipation. On June 19, 1865, General Order Number 3 was issued, informing the people of Texas that all enslaved people in the US were freed by executive decree. https://lnkd.in/gVdHnccM

Elder abuse is a global social issue that affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) provides an opportunity for communities across the globe to promote a better understanding of the abuse and neglect of older persons. WEAAD reminds us that elder abuse impacts the entire community. Identifying, addressing, and preventing this public and human rights issue is essential. Consumer Direct Care Network (CDCN) is pleased to host an exhibit at this year's National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) Mid-Years Conference.
