Compton Unified’s Office of Special Education held the ESY Special Olympics today at Centennial High School. Scholars from numerous district schools and representing all grades took part in the activities. As part of the exciting morning, students navigated obstacle courses, ran races, played volleyball, soccer, and several other thrilling games. This was the first time since 2016 the district has held an event like this, and administrators are planning a bigger event next April. Judging by the smiles on scholars’ faces, everyone had a great time! #SpecialOlympics #fun #races #obstaclecourses #comptonunified #elevate

Meet Melany Veliz, Centennial High School Class of 2024 graduate. She’ll be attending UC Santa Barbara in the fall, majoring in Media Arts. Her interest in Media Arts stems from her love of drawing and making her own animations. She hopes to work for an animation company after college and wants to make logos for corporations in the future. She says the best thing about attending Centennial High School was the amount of resources and programs that they offer and the people who helped make it better. She stayed busy while in high school, taking part in the Spanish Club, Anime Club, and was in the Gear Up program. She was also an athlete, and played on the soccer, softball, volleyball, and cross-country teams. One of her challenges in school was balancing being an athlete and finishing all her school work, but with the support of her teachers and coaches, she was able to make it happen. Melany Veliz is another Compton Success Story. #UCSantaBarbara #success #education #ComptonUnified #Elevate Micah Ali Darin Brawley Satra Zurita Denzell O. Meet Sugarland Rojas, Compton Early College High School Class of 2024 graduate. She also graduated from Compton College with an AA degree. She’ll be attending UCLA in the fall, majoring in Biology. She’s known since fifth grade that she’s wanted to go into the medical field and become a surgeon. While in high school, she started a few clubs, including a book lovers club, to focus on her leadership skills. In the book lovers club, they hosted book drives for schools that didn’t have libraries, among other things. She struggled academically during her junior year after her grandfather passed away, but she was able to overcome the challenge and bring her grades back up by the end of the semester. She values her education because her parents weren’t able to go to college. She believes an education will open the doors and opportunities that you don’t think will exist. Nine Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) scholars from Mr. Escobar’s Dominguez High School class completed a two-day, 16-hour training in High School Summer Sports Medicine – Athletic Training Student Mentoring Camp at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach last weekend. They also earned a Certificate from The West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation - Team to Win and 14 hours of community service. Most of the students have a busy summer school schedule, but still took up the challenge to complete the event and excel. Casandra Contreras earned a medal on the first day of academic competition in Anatomy. She beat 16 participants on her way to the finals! Everyone else did well too. All the Dominguez scholars had a blast! #EMR #CTE #SportsMedicine #SummerCamp #ComptonUnified #Elevate
