In response to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres' call to action on #ExtremeHeat, a group of philanthropies convened by ClimateWorks Foundation is catalyzing an initiative for philanthropy to invest an initial commitment of $50 million in climate adaptation and resilience efforts in regions most vulnerable to the impacts of #ClimateChange, including extreme heat. “The climate crisis presents unprecedented challenges to our health, economic well-being, and safety. How we tackle it offers a unique opportunity to build a future where no one is left behind. Philanthropy can help drive positive social impact by supporting innovative approaches to climate adaptation and resilience, such as piloting community-based parametric insurance in India, building coalitions to advocate for debt reform for small island developing states, fostering entrepreneurship in East Africa to develop cold chain infrastructure, and scaling the use of solar-reflective ‘cool’ roofs. We proudly support this collective effort and philanthropy’s growing investments in adaptation and resilience. Together, we can create a more resilient future.” – Helen M., President and CEO, ClimateWorks Foundation ➡ Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/gpJJgqm5 Arab Foundations Forum (AFF), Autodesk Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Howden Foundation, Humanity United, Laudes Foundation, Quadrature Climate Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Shockwave Foundation, Trafigura Foundation, Wellcome Trust #ClimateAction

This week the world has experienced the three hottest days on record. But let’s face facts: extreme temperatures are no longer a one day, one week or one month phenomenon. Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere. Billions of people are facing an extreme heat epidemic. Heat is estimated to kill almost half a million people a year. We know what is driving it: fossil fuel-charged, human-induced climate change. Extreme heat is the new abnormal. But the good news is we can save lives and limit its impact. Today we launched a global call to action focused on on: 🔸Caring for the most vulnerable. 🔸Stepping up protections for workers. 🔸Boosting resilience. 🔸Limiting temperature rise and phasing out fossil fuels. https://lnkd.in/d3r_azEX

This week, the Global Methane Hub announced more than $300 million in new funding to support #methane reduction around the world. Read about how philanthropy supported the launch of the Global Methane Hub — and can continue to help drive momentum: https://lnkd.in/gJmjM8PE #Impact4Climate
Today, we were proud to participate in the Biden-Harris Administration’s White House Super Pollutants Summit and to announce over $300 million in new funding to continue this important work. Since its inception in 2021, the Global Methane Hub has helped catalyze over $10 billion in methane reducing project investments by convening funders focused on addressing climate change and strategically regranting $200 million to 114 grantees conducting methane reduction work in 152 countries. This summit highlighted the recent progress the U.S. has made in addressing super pollutants both domestically and internationally, as well as raised awareness of the importance of tackling climate super pollutants like methane. We’re in a sprint to lower methane emissions to save our planet, and it will take a concerted effort from governments, philanthropies, and industry leaders in the fight to reduce harmful emissions. Sessions like this, along with the ongoing work our incredible partner network is doing, go a long way to do just that. https://lnkd.in/e-DN5vJC

“A #JustTransition that doesn’t impede development in #Asia, where so many still live without basic services such as electricity, is essential for sustainability as well as #equity. With the region producing half of global #GHG emissions and its energy consumption 80% reliant on fossil fuels – plus the projected doubling of energy demand in the region by 2050 – this is not just an unprecedented opportunity but an urgent call to action for multistakeholder collaboration.” 💡 Read the latest insights on Asia’s future in #SustainableFinance and the essential role of a collective approach in this new blog by the World Economic Forum’s Giving to Amplify Earth Action (#GAEA), featuring Philanthropy Asia Alliance. https://lnkd.in/dyAccWgP

This month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) celebrates its 80th anniversary amid proposals to reform the global financial system for the 21st century. Jwala Rambarran, a Distinguished Fellow at ClimateWorks Foundation, shares an overview of the interim review document and outlines five key recommendations to drive impact. 👇 Read more via Boston University Global Development Policy Center: https://lnkd.in/dyhVKeRA
While the IMF’s interim review of its newly created lending instrument, the Resilient and Sustainability Trust (RST), represents small progress, many of the major shortcomings of the RST regrettably remain in place.

#DYK seaweed farming is the quickest-growing sector in #aquaculture? Our #CDR program funds seaweed research because it acts as an ocean-based forest, absorbing #CarbonDioxide and storing it when it falls to the sea floor. That's why we're thrilled to spotlight our grantee's interactive StoryMap, "Growing Seaweed in the Golden State." 🌊 In this resource, California Ocean Science Trust explores #SeaweedFarms and research across California, providing valuable insights into the industry’s current state and the science behind seaweed aquaculture. You'll also find stories and perspectives from researchers and practitioners in the field. 👀 Check out the interactive content: https://lnkd.in/gAXHmiUp #CarbonDioxideRemoval #ClimateAction

As global temperatures continue to rise, an increasing number of people will turn to air conditioning to stay cool (if they can afford to). According to data from The Washington Post, around 71% of summer days in the U.S. now require AC, up from 66% in the early 1980s. By 2060, this figure could reach up to 87%. While AC brings a host of benefits to society, it can also place a major strain on power grids and our climate. We must ensure that our growing demand for AC is met with super-efficient, climate-friendly technologies. Passive cooling techniques must also be deployed to reduce the need for air conditioning by naturally improving thermal comfort. How many days will you need AC where you live? While access to cooling is often taken for granted by many in countries like the U.S. – where most households have some form of air conditioning – roughly 1,500 people in the country still die each year from the impacts of extreme heat. In fact, heat waves claim more lives in the U.S. than any other weather-related event. With some 130 million people across western states currently under an extreme heat warning, it’s essential that we take urgent action to increase access to affordable, efficient, and climate-friendly cooling solutions, particularly for those who face the most significant risks. This need extends far beyond the U.S., with more than 1.1 billion people globally considered to be at high risk from a lack of access to cooling. As the world continues to warm and extreme heat events become more frequent and severe, we must secure clean cooling for all.
