Today, we were proud to participate in the Biden-Harris Administration’s White House Super Pollutants Summit and to announce over $300 million in new funding to continue this important work. Since its inception in 2021, the Global Methane Hub has helped catalyze over $10 billion in methane reducing project investments by convening funders focused on addressing climate change and strategically regranting $200 million to 114 grantees conducting methane reduction work in 152 countries. This summit highlighted the recent progress the U.S. has made in addressing super pollutants both domestically and internationally, as well as raised awareness of the importance of tackling climate super pollutants like methane. We’re in a sprint to lower methane emissions to save our planet, and it will take a concerted effort from governments, philanthropies, and industry leaders in the fight to reduce harmful emissions. Sessions like this, along with the ongoing work our incredible partner network is doing, go a long way to do just that. https://lnkd.in/e-DN5vJC

Catalyzing action to reduce methane emissions in the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors
Sobre nosotros
Reducing methane gas is the fastest way to address climate change in the short term. Methane emissions have contributed to roughly 30% of current warming, causing harm to communities around the globe. Reducing methane by 45% is crucial to reducing warming by 0.3 degrees Celsius by 2040 and putting us on a path to a healthy future. While many countries have methane reduction strategies in place, this is the first coordinated approach to methane mitigation funding. We move fast, are nimble, and operate with ambition and vision. The Hub focuses on the energy, agricultural, and waste sectors which account for 96% of human-caused methane emissions. We support ambitious catalytic investments, lay the groundwork for long-term transformation of challenging sectors, and also deliver quick wins in sectors that are ripe for action on the ground. Our actions are global in nature, based out of Santiago, Chile. We focus on the highest emitting sectors and regions.

Climate Change AI is excited to announce the 2024 edition of our Innovation Grants program! We will fund year-long projects at the intersection of climate change and machine learning for up to USD 150K per project, for a total of up to USD 1.4M. We are grateful for the support of Quadrature Climate Foundation, Google DeepMind, and Global Methane Hub, and for fiscal sponsorship from the Canada Hub of Future Earth. For the Main Track, example topics include, but are not limited to: -ML to aid mitigation approaches in relevant sectors such as agriculture, buildings and cities, heavy industry and manufacturing, power and energy systems, transportation, forestry and other land use -ML applied to societal adaptation to climate change, including disaster prediction, management, and relief in relevant sectors -ML for climate and Earth science, ecosystems, and natural systems as relevant to mitigation and adaptation -ML for R&D of low-carbon technologies such as electrofuels and carbon capture & sequestration -ML approaches in behavioral and social science related to climate change, including those anchored in climate finance and economics, climate justice, and climate policy -Projects addressing AI governance in the context of climate change, or that aim to assess the greenhouse gas emissions impacts of AI or AI-driven applications This year’s Innovation Grants program will also feature two Special Tracks in addition to the Main Track: -Special Track on Methane: Addressing methane-related climate change mitigation in the short/medium term period. -Special Track on Dataset Gaps: Primary focus on the creation of datasets or simulators. Proposals in this special track may request support from a Google DeepMind researcher, in addition to the financial award. The submission deadline is September 15, 2024. Informational webinars will be held on July 30, 2024 @ 9 am ET/1 pm UTC and August 15, 2024 @ 12 pm ET/4 pm UTC. The Biden Administration’s announcement of $850 million in funding for projects under the Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP) is a critical step to reduce methane pollution from fossil fuel production. This helps us get closer to saving our climate and community in our lifetime. Curbing methane pollution is a global public health issue that will not only improve public health in local communities living or working near oil and gas facilities, but also help the U.S. achieve its climate goals. Coupled with recent EU passage of their own emissions standards, momentum is behind policy around the world. At Global Methane Hub, we are working with partners in the US and across the globe to go even further. Methane pollution from fossil fuel extraction makes up more than a third of global methane emissions. If we’re going to significantly reduce pollution, it’s going to take all of us working together. We know greater transparency is required to tackle methane. But how can we get a fuller picture of methane emissions worldwide? Two satellite programs are up to the task, joining others in orbit to detect, quantify, and track methane emissions at different levels of granularity. MethaneSAT by Environmental Defense Fund acts like a wide-angle lens and measures methane over wide areas, detecting and aggregating emissions that we might not be seeing today. The Carbon Mapper Coalition satellite, led by Carbon Mapper, developed by Planet Labs with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory technology acts like a zoom lens, detecting large bursts of methane at specific facilities or pieces of equipment. BOTH views are important as we work together to provide the public data decision makers need to design and prioritize climate solutions. https://lnkd.in/gwn8NV8R
