On July 21, 2024, the Climate Shift Index indicated 3.5 billion people globally experienced excessive temperatures made at least 3 times more likely due to climate change. Copernicus ECMWF data showed the daily global average temperature reached a then-record 17.09°C (which was then broken July 22nd, with an average temperature of 17.15°C) Explore the #ClimateShiftIndex & see how climate change is impacting temperatures across the globe → csi.climatecentral.org

This week's #ClimateShiftIndex Emphasis: 🔴 Western United States: Another week. Another continued stretch of extraordinary temperatures. Heat Advisories, Red Flag Warning (high fire danger), & Excessive Heat Watches/Warnings are in place, per National Weather Service. Climate Shift Index shows high temperatures between 95° & 105° are made 3x to 5x more likely due to human-caused climate change. 🔴 Western ➡ Central Canada: According to officials in British Columbia: "Wildfires have forced hundreds from their homes in Canada’s westernmost province, officials warn weeks more of scorching temperatures will add pressure to fire crews" 300 wildfires are burning, with more than half considered "out of control" (per The Guardian: https://lnkd.in/evsQ8EUv) Excessive heat is shifting east. Saskatchewan's 35°C high temperatures (Mid-90°F) by mid-week are made at least 5x at likely in late July due to climate change Explore the Climate Shift Index: https://lnkd.in/e3e_pNV6

Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924. In the 100 years since, the city has warmed 5.5°F during the Olympics period, putting athletes and others at risk. 🔴 Days with highs above 86°F (30°C) are now THREE TIMES more frequent in Paris than when the city last hosted the games. 🔴 The Tokyo Olympics in 2021 were the hottest Games ever, when extreme humid heat led to 146 reported cases of heat-related illness among Olympic and Paralympic athletes. This week's Extreme Heat Workshop "set to highlight knowledge gaps in understanding of the drivers of extreme heat waves, the occurrence of simultaneous heatwaves, the co-occurrences of extreme heat with other climate hazards such as wildfire, and which interventions would most effectively increase resilience in a changing climate." Grateful to Columbia Climate School for having Andrew Pershing talk about the science of the #ClimateShiftIndex & what it can do to help connect how much more frequent and intense heat has become due to our changing climate.
