Germany to protect cities against rising temperatures with urban heat strategy 🏡 What does it mean? ➡ Germany's buildings ministry #BMWSB is taking steps to better protect people and infrastructure in Germany's cities against increasing periods of high heat. Why does it matter? ➡ Germany's towns and cities are insufficiently prepared to deal with more frequent and more severe flooding, periods of high heat, and drought and water shortages. When it comes to heat-preparedness, many German cities received a "red card" for being heavily sealed and offering too little green space for cooling air temperatures, according to a Deutsche Umwelthilfe report. What's in the strategy? ➡ It suggests six fields of action, including the installation of more drinking water fountains, the creation of more green spaces, and identifying public cool places in cities for people to shelter. Climate adaptation is gaining ground 🌱 Germany introduced a nationwide #ClimateAdaptation law in 2023, requiring municipalities to draw up local risk analyses and adaptation plans. Additionally, the health ministry presented Germany's first #heat protection plan aiming to reduce heat-related deaths. 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dZh8ACWa 📕 Full strategy: https://lnkd.in/di666RVv Keep up to date with the most important developments in Germany's and Europe's #energytransition by signing up to our Daily or Weekly Briefings ✉ https://lnkd.in/deH7TURc

Overwhelmed, simply over the moon. 📣 We received 100 applications for our one-week Clean Energy Wire | CLEW #energytransition #journalism Academy in September! And we only invited colleagues from within Europe..... Looking through the applications and motivation letters to make a truly tough decision, I am left with three thoughts: 🎁 100 professional journalists apply to spend 7 days of their working time with us in Berlin: what an enormous sign of trust and a massive compliment to the whole team! We have been receiving a lot of positive feedback for our own journalism and the work with some 1,500 individual colleagues during research tours and workshops for a decade now, but this is another level of appreciation. Thank you, we'll work hard to live up to your expectiations! 🌲 It's a sign that the relevance of covering all facettes of #climatepolicy and #energytransition competently has sunk in. Seems that journalists - and many media houses - have understood that in a fast-changing public discourse environment they have to take a more active (note: not activist) role in providing the relevant solution-oriented information to the public. Also a nod to the institutions and engaged journalism changemakers who have been working on this. Alexandra Borchardt Wolfgang Blau Netzwerk Klimajournalismus Deutschland Sara Schurmann Netzwerk Klimajournalismus Österreich Oxford Climate Alumni Network Hostwriter Stanley Center for Peace and Security Devon Terrill 💰 We would love to run such an Academy regularly. We'll work on getting this done. Now: back to work to get the sessions in shape. Clemens Schöll Milou Dirkx Marianna Raizner Natalia Sezer Journalismfund Europe Ides Debruyne Richard Black

🙏 Thank you Climate.Table for the honour. It's quite special indeed for a number of reasons: 📝 The journalists working for Climate Table (and other Tables) rank among the most competent and open-minded I have had the pleasure to meet over the past 10 years since launching CLEW. Their judgement means a lot. 💡 Many of the media colleagues and changemakers on the list have always been an inspiration. I am deeply honoured to stand next to them. Simon Evans Ed King Luisa Neubauer Jenny Chase 🎆 Most importantly though I take this as a recognition of the excellent work of my whole team. How to prepare for the French snap election and the potential outcome, especially looking at Europe's climate and energy policy? Clean Energy Wire | CLEW team has swung into action and luckily we have the right colleagues to report from the ground. Our network approach and move to cover Europe paying off. 📩 Juliette Portala and Claire Stam wrote a comprehensive preview and Juliette's latest Dispatch from #France follows through with the latest state of play in energy and climate policy. 🚚 Our guide offers the background to put statements and plans from the varying parties into perspective https://lnkd.in/dpjXjDpT 🙏 Thanks to the whole team for proving its agility and commitment once again (despite the start of the holiday season). 🎩 Hats off btw to Carbon Brief for sifting through the election platforms despite probably being very busy with the other big election looming.
