We do this through policy research—by developing and testing new ideas, generating and analyzing information, and examining policies, programs, and practices across a wide range of service systems and organizations. Chapin Hall takes a broad perspective, embracing an interest in policies that promote the well-being of all children and youth while devoting special attention to those facing significant problems.

Children and families of color are disproportionately represented in the child welfare system. The Family First Prevention Services Act gives us an opportunity to address this inequity with evidence-based interventions. Culturally specific interventions see the role of race and culture as central to developing solutions to challenges that families face. Familias Unidas is one of them. This drug and sexual risk prevention program is designed specifically for Hispanic first generation Spanish-speaking caregivers and adolescents and was rated as "well supported" by the Clearinghouse. How do employment patterns impact child care needs for low-income families? Chapin Hall research on the Child Care Assistance Program in Illinois sheds light on this issue. Many parents in the program work in sectors with evening and weekend work with inconsistent schedules, which means they need flexible #ChildCare options. And the majority of participating families' incomes are well below the eligibility threshold, underscoring how important this program is. The struggle to improve public schools has been an important part of my work and personal life, as I know it has been for many of you. In my new book, Persuasive: 40 Lessons in Communicating for the Common Good, five chapters focus on lessons learned in communicating within schools and about school reform. These chapters address advocating for my foster daughters and son within their public schools, organizing parents while at SEIU, and working in DC Public Schools during the tumultuous tenure of Chancellor Michelle Rhee.
