Teachers this year saw the effects of the pandemic’s stress and isolation on young students: Some can barely speak, sit still or even hold a pencil. It’s too early to know whether young children will experience long-term effects from the pandemic, but researchers say there are reasons to be optimistic. Did you know housing insecurity starting from infancy can lead to poorer adolescent health? Housing is widely recognized as a social determinant of health and in children, housing insecurity has been associated with a variety of negative physical and mental health outcomes. A new study in the American Academy of Pediatrics Journal reveals that teens who experienced housing insecurity earlier in life report worse health outcomes. Rahil Briggs, National Director of HealthySteps, highlights that according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, shelter is as vital as breathing and water for children. The absence of secure housing can cause stress that affects their health for years and early childhood experiences have a lasting impact on long-term well-being.
