#Homelessness is a systemic issue. It’s also a preventable one. Over 14 months, Chapin Hall collaborated with partners and young experts from across the homelessness space to transform their knowledge and experiences into a national #Prevention strategy. We conducted in-depth interviews to understand youth’s pathways through homelessness, hosted working groups to identify solutions, and did a systematic review of prevention evidence. Now, we have a national strategy to share that can help us build a future where every young person has the foundation for success: https://lnkd.in/g8hvxqJE

Chapin Hall has, since its inception in 1985 as a research and policy center, focused on a mission of improving the well-being of children and youth, families, and their communities. We do this through policy research—by developing and testing new ideas, generating and analyzing information, and examining policies, programs, and practices across a wide range of service systems and organizations. Chapin Hall takes a broad perspective, embracing an interest in policies that promote the well-being of all children and youth while devoting special attention to those facing significant problems.

Our 13-year longitudinal research that looks at Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) participation reveals a growing trend in child-only TANF cases, where no adult recipients are involved: https://lnkd.in/gBQw-thy These children tend to remain on #TANF longer and are more consistent in receiving support compared to adult recipients. It's important that we gain a deeper understanding of how child-only cases are being leveraged across states and their impact on TANF participation. #ChildWellbeing

For many low-income parents, subsidized #ChildCare is crucial for maintaining employment and continuing their own education. We analyzed employment patterns and child care needs of Illinois families enrolled in the Child Care Assistance Program. Findings show that 85% of these families earn below 150% of the Federal Poverty Line and 1 in 5 parents were in school: https://lnkd.in/gTAAbYXH This highlights how critical support from this subsidized child care program is. Explore all insights in our three short briefs.

How do we make sure youth feel "plugged in" to community after they age out of #FosterCare? Our latest report explores learnings from the National Think Tank convened by the Selfless Love Foundation, which brought together youth with lived expertise, #ChildWelfare professionals, and cross-system partners from 28 states: https://lnkd.in/gCK4AcNB They explored innovative policies and practices to support transition-age youth by building long-lasting networks of support. With collaboration and intentional planning, we can create healthier, connected communities that help youth thrive.

It's National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Did you know that people belonging to racial and ethnic minority groups face significant disparities in #MentalHealth care? The blueprint for the Illinois Children's Behavioral Health Transformation Initiative highlights the fact that Black residents have higher rates of adverse childhood experiences, increasing their risk for mental health challenges: https://lnkd.in/gShQU99m The initiative is working to streamline services, improve coordination, and ensure equitable access to care for all young people. #NMMHAM #BehavioralHealth

SCOTUS’s decision on Grants Pass v Johnson is deeply concerning and undermines efforts to prevent and solve #Homelessness. As the organization behind the comprehensive Voices of Youth Count study, we understand young people often experience housing instability because systems failed to give them the right supports at the right time. There is an urgent need for systems that recognize that people's humanity and aid them overcome obstacles — not create more. Read Bryan Samuels' statement below for more information on how this decision could impact our nation's young people.
SCOTUS’s recent decision on Grants Pass v Johnson is more than disappointing; it is dangerous. As research and policy experts who conducted the first and only national count of youth experiencing homelessness along with in-depth interviews with participants—Voices of Youth Count—we know how complex the issue is. Many youth who become homeless are without shelter due to systems failing them multiple times. Whether it’s aging out of the foster care system with no money or housing assistance or being unable to complete school, criminalization of their very state of being adds yet another huge obstacle that may be insurmountable for some. https://lnkd.in/eQbN8Smj #youthhomelessness #GrantsPass #SCOTUS

Did you know? From 2010 to 2022, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program saw a 63% decline in caseloads, with only a brief increase during the COVID-19 pandemic. We observed this trend across all states and major racial groups, and it represents a broad shift in #TANF participation. Understanding these patterns is crucial for developing evidence-informed policies that address the evolving needs of families. Dive deeper into these dynamics with a summary of 13 years of longitudinal TANF participation data: https://lnkd.in/gBQw-thy #ChildWellbeing Our partners on this work are OPRE, Coleridge Initiative, Actionable Intelligence for Social Policy (AISP), and MDRC
