This July, Butterfly Pavilion is especially excited to announce that we have successfully raised our fourth firefly larva into adulthood! Known as “Ferdinand,” this firefly has been under our care for the past two years. Research like this is vital, as there is still much to learn about fireflies. Understanding their life cycle and behaviors can help address the significant declines in their populations and guide conservation efforts. Just two weeks ago, our team ventured out to collect fireflies in Colorado to study their breeding patterns and improve our ability to raise them successfully. I recently had a chance to visit Simon Property Group's Thornton location of the Denver Premium Outlets where Premier Members Credit Union is the Presenting Sponsor of the mural celebrating pollinators, coordinated by the Butterfly Pavilion. Wendy Manning at Simon is a truly amazing collaborator and has provided the credit union with wildly popular social and tabling opportunities. Kudos to Garrett Chappell and Karen Bigelow on my team for bringing this opportunity to life!

Butterfly Pavilion and the Bureau of Land Management - Colorado (BLM CO), have partnered to execute the “Survey of Colorado Diurnal Pollinators & Other Invertebrates on BLM Managed Land in Colorado” to further statewide invertebrate research and conservation. The project will enhance invertebrate knowledge leading to more effective conservation and education action in Colorado and beyond. Such work is crucial because these small creatures comprise 97% of all animals, form the foundation of life on Earth, and are declining at alarming rates. Managing public lands to help protect invertebrate species is pivotal to maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem health. Do you feel disconnected from the ocean because you live far from the coast? As a young person growing up in land-locked Colorado, it was a bit hard to see how my life was connected to something so far away. However, my love and understanding of the ocean blossomed during my visits to the Butterfly Pavilion, an educational institution with oceanic exhibits that sparked my curiosity about marine life. Institutions like the Butterfly Pavilion work to inform the public about the importance of ecosystems, no matter how far away they are. We need more ocean stories and more ocean storytellers to foster urgency, compassion, and action for hopeful, inventive ocean futures.
