Bringing together +200 businesses committed to supporting the development of a UN treaty to end plastic pollution.
About us
The development of a legally binding UN treaty is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the plastic pollution crisis in a globally coordinated way. We must act urgently on a global, coordinated scale to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy for plastics, or the plastic pollution crisis will only get worse. The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty brings together +230 businesses committed to supporting the development of an ambitious, effective and legally binding UN treaty to end plastic pollution. The coalition is convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, in collaboration with aligned businesses and supported by strategic NGO partners. The coalition will develop ambitious policy recommendations, engage with treaty negotiators, and build confidence in the business community on the benefits and necessity of an effective treaty that sets common goals, rules, and obligations to be implemented in national jurisdictions.

🌍 This week, Clear Skies attended the Principles for Responsible Investment Circular Economy Reference Group Workshop. We were inspired by the insights from Carsten Wachholz of the Business For A Plastics Treaty, Jan Raes from United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), and Jennifer Black from the World Benchmarking Alliance. >>>The PRI circular economy reference groups’ mission is to help investors incorporate circular economy principles into value chains and their broader investment strategies. 💡We believe true systemic change comes from collaboration beyond just corporates. #Policymakers, #governments, and #regulators play a pivotal role by implementing ambitious regulations to mitigate negative impacts on #nature. In April 2024, Clear Skies signed the Financial Sector statement on plastics (https://lnkd.in/e33SPQfc), advocating for a robust global plastics treaty. This statement, endorsed by 160 financial institutions and drafted by the PRI, UNEP FI, Finance for Biodiversity, VBDO, the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, CDP, and other PRI signatories, gained the attention of member states and delegates at high-level events and the INC-4 negotiations in #Ottawa. #impactinvesting #impactinvestmentmanagement #teamclearskies #Biodiversity

Without clear rules, things can get…messy. Sports need global rules - and so does a treaty that can end #plasticpollution. https://lnkd.in/eevNtrdn #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules to level the playing field in the plastics value chain, towards reducing, reusing, and redesigning plastic products - including the cups we drink from. We need harmonised regulations to tackle the entire lifecycle of plastic products. To achieve a legally-binding treaty to end plastic pollution, all businesses must take part. There is unprecedented agreement across the plastics value chain that global rules are good for business. It is clear that #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules While voluntary actions have shown promise in driving change, they will not solve the problem on their own and must be scaled up globally. Explore the latest report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF “Making the Global Plastics Treaty work for Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs)” below. ⬇️ #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #Biz4PlasticsTreaty
Policymakers can be confident that there is broad support among Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) for an ambitious and legally binding plastics treaty, a new study commissioned by the Foundation and WWF, has found. By design, a UN treaty to end plastic pollution must transform the plastics industry and drive change across the plastic packaging value chain, from major multinationals to MSMEs. The study has further shown that: ⚪ Global rules can unlock significant opportunities and benefits across the MSME landscape, if implemented effectively and fairly in the treaty. ⚪ To ensure that MSMEs harness the expected benefits over time, the treaty should establish specific policy measures that support MSMEs in managing the transition, such as differentiated implementation timelines and dedicated financing for MSMEs. Reflecting on learnings for #Africa on my recent participation in the fourth session of the #GlobalPlasticsTreaty negotiations (INC-4) in Ottawa, Canada; I was glad to be a part of a "once in a lifetime" opportunity and process that will make a difference for our world and communities, the discussions were not only insightful but encouraging as ultimately we were all there to find a solution. I made connections with inspirational individuals, listened and learned a great deal from experts and innovators. It was great to see progress particularly the acknowledgment of Africa’s role, unique challenges and possible ways to scale efforts on the continent. Commitment and collaboration will be the unique ingredient that will address the complexities the region faces. Progressive policies that will support large scale efforts, innovation as well as enable financing of critical infrastructure for efficient waste management systems will make this a reality. Still much more to be done to work through the details ahead of the next session in Busan, South Korea - ultimately every step forward in bringing so many countries and regions towards one goal - without leaving anyone behind will make the world a better place. Berry Global is proud to be part of #Biz4PlasticsTreaty and I would like to thank Hein for his excellent leadership.
With the fourth round of negotiations for a UN treaty to end plastic pollution now concluded, Unilever CEO Hein Schumacher reflects on the progress made and the road ahead: "I felt it necessary for governments to hear directly why a treaty with globally binding rules – including rules on upstream policy interventions – is what business needs. Unilever and the Business Coalition are calling for global rules because voluntary initiatives alone will not solve the crisis. Furthermore, at Unilever, we know that for us to deliver on our plastic packaging commitments, we need all actors to pull in the same direction. As I mentioned in my plenary speech in Ottawa, this means governments putting in place policies that level the playing field. Business responds to regulatory certainty, but the reality is we are facing a hugely fragmented policy environment for packaging from country to country. A treaty can harmonise this landscape, helping to simplify our supply chains, scale existing solutions and spur further innovation."
