We're delighted to share the Northwest developer Killian Pacific's 2023 Impact Report, showcasing how they integrate social impact into every project. Check out their progress and learn about their commitment to ongoing improvement as a B Corp. Brightworks Sustainability provided comprehensive services for Killian Pacific across multiple fronts, including Energy Star Portfolio Integration, Performance Reporting and Support, ESG Support Services, and Utility Audit Services. For the Energy Star Portfolio Integration scope, Brightworks facilitated data collection, review, and account setup, ensuring seamless integration with the Measurabl reporting platform. In the Performance Reporting and Support scope, Brightworks continued data validation efforts, enhancing dashboard visualization, and refining building characteristics. We provided ongoing support for energy, water, and waste data integration, conducted stakeholder outreach, and developed a procedures manual for integrating these systems with new acquisitions. For the ESG Support scope, Brightworks performed a Carbon Materiality Assessment, established a Carbon Emissions Baseline, and produced a Findings Report. We educated Killian Pacific on relevant ESG frameworks and carbon neutrality, offering strategic insights for sustainability planning. In the Utility Audit scope for the Goat Blocks multifamily development, Brightworks conducted an on-site conditions audit, coordinated with utility companies, and mapped utility meters. We created a Findings Report detailing key observations, meter inventories, and recommendations for efficiency improvements and accurate billing. Says Nicole Stein, Director of Sustainability & Social Impact at Killian Pacific, "This report marks our progress in the ongoing journey towards building a legacy of impactful real estate development. It represents our deep commitment to fostering communities that are resilient and can thrive – upholding our promise for a more sustainable future for our company, stakeholders, and planet." Tallulah is Choctaw for “leaping water” and is the name of Brookfield Properties' five story multi-family development at the site of the Cumberland Mall in Vinings, GA, appropriately sited near the Chattahoochee River. This development offers residents a place of respite and repose along with its convenient location. Brookfield sought to create a space that recalled the state park for which it was named while offering occupants amenities, services, and access to meet the needs of modern life. Inspired by an eco-industrial aesthetic, Tallulah brings in local, natural elements throughout the decor to help connect residents with nature. Brookfield sought to create a space that recalled the state park for which it was named while offering occupants amenities, services, and access to meet the needs of modern life. Inspired by an eco-industrial aesthetic, Tallulah brings in local, natural elements throughout the decor to help connect residents with nature. To help Brookfield achieve its sustainability goals for the 326-unit residential development, Brightworks Sustainability provided LEED Residential program and Fitwel program management, as well as sustainability program and commissioning services. Brightworks has worked with Brookfield on many other projects across their vast portfolio, so this experience allowed us to leverage a wealth of client-specific insights, deploying tested Brookfield standards. Brightworks' Bernardo Ruiz Montoya, Melanie Bontusa LEED AP BDC, Homes AP, Green Rater, and Clara Canino Hermosillo helped the project team uncover strategies to maximize sustainability while fulfilling program credits. Minimizing and tracking both energy and water consumption while keeping occupant health and comfort was a top priority. Special attention was paid to the calming effect of natural elements, and biophilic design was employed to promote occupant wellness. LEED efforts focused on material selections and Brookfield’s desire to purchase interior products that score best in their respective categories. Fitwel efforts centered around green purchasing policies for cleaning products, pest management, and cleaning procedures. Notice the subtle differences – both certifications focus on occupant wellness and safety but where LEED looks at capital expenditures, Fitwel looks more at operating expenditures. The project is aiming to achieve LEED Silver certification, and Fitwel 1-star certification! The best of both worlds. #LEED #Fitwel #multifamilydevelopment #esgstrategy #greenbuilding #sustainabledevelopment #biophilicdesign

A big congratulations to Brightworks' Cassidy Green and MemorialCare's Yair Katz, CPA, Chad Kurz, LEED AP and Christina Bell for getting the MemorialCare Miller Children's & Women's Hospital of Long Beach to LEED Gold certification! Providing critical support for one of California’s eight free-standing children’s hospitals, the new Cherese Mari Laulhere Children's Village was designed to provide a sustainable, healthy, and compassionate environment for children's outpatient care. As a part of achieving LEED Gold certification, the team expanded access to electric vehicle charging, installed solar PV renewable energy, and integrated biophilic design elements throughout, fostering a feeling of connectedness to nature among patients, employees, and visitors. #patientcare #biophilicdesign #LEEDgold
Chief Executive Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital and Senior Vice President of Pediatrics MemorialCare
Today at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach we celebrated the receipt of a LEED Gold award for the Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village where we provide comprehensive pediatric health care with more than 25 specialties in-house. I’m so very proud of Chad Kurz, LEED AP and Christina Bell and their teams, who achieved LEED Gold certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Thank you to Cassidy Green from Brightworks Sustainability for attending and presenting our hospital’s LEED Gold plaque. As a children’s hospital, we want all children to grow up healthy, on a healthy planet. Green buildings allow companies, like us, to operate more sustainably and give the people inside them a healthier, more comfortable space to work and receive care. #MemorialCare #LEED
