The safety of the communities in which we live and work is paramount at BNSF, and starting this year, we recognize the state departments of transportation (DOTs) that are equally dedicated to improving railroad safety. The inaugural “Tracking to Zero” awards honor states that are helping reduce grade-crossing incidents across our 32,500-mile network. The first-of-their-kind awards go to Idaho, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming for averaging less than one grade-crossing incident per one million BNSF train miles traveled in their respective states. *STATE TO WATCH: We also would like to recognize the Illinois DOT as a “State to Watch” this year, with a rate of 1.1 incidents per million BNSF train miles, nearing that 1.0 safety milestone. Congratulations to these state DOTs and thank you for helping BNSF realize our safety vision, which includes zero grade-crossing incidents on our railroad. It was an honor to celebrate our Montana employees and welcome former Montana Rail Link employees to BNSF, with the Employee Appreciation Special (EAS) train ride! The special takes place every year, and this year, it operated across our Montana Rail Link Subdivision. Local employees and their families had the opportunity to see the rails they operate every day from a new perspective, while enjoying the scenic mountain views. Thank you to all our team members for your hard work and dedication to moving the nation’s freight safely and efficiently. We’re proud to have you on Team BNSF! #trainride #employeeappreciation

We're making steady progress in resolving disruptions on our rail network caused by record-breaking flooding across Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota.    Several subdivisions were initially put out of service, but the Canton, Corson and Madison subdivisions in South Dakota are already back in operation. Work continues to bring our Marshall Subdivision, which runs from Sioux City, Iowa, to Willmar, Minnesota, back online.    Freight traffic is being re-routed to minimize the impact to our customers. BNSF crews are clearing debris and repairing tracks in areas where water has receded.   We appreciate our customers' business and are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore normal operations. Thank you to our BNSF teams who are doing what it takes to keep freight moving in these challenging conditions.   #flooding #Iowa #SouthDakota #Minnesota #freight

BNSF's General Director of Public Investment, French Thompson, joined The Minnesota Freight Advisory Committee meeting last week as a panelist to share BNSF’s perspective on the innovative Willmar Wye project – a notable example of successful collaboration between public and private entities.   The Willmar Wye involved building a 2.8-mile rail line that connects two BNSF subdivisions, allowing trains to bypass Willmar and its downtown terminal. This achievement has resulted in improved safety and efficiency, and laid the groundwork for future economic growth in the region.   This project is a testament to the power of strong community involvement and effective partnerships. It was recently recognized with a regional America's Transportation Award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). As we celebrate Pride Month in June, we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of our LGBTQ+ team members, while also recognizing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including their fight for equal rights.   BNSF's PRIDE+ business resource group has adopted Dallas Pride's theme of “Unity in the Community."    PRIDE+ is hosting virtual events this month open to all BNSF team members, including:    - An appearance by Sharon Herrera, the founder of LGBTQ Saves; - An educational session by Jamie Henkel, vice president of Learnings and Inclusion at PFLAG;   - A panel of team members who will share their experiences as a member or ally of the LGBTQ+ community. To all of our team members who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, thank you for all you contribute to make BNSF the company it is today. Happy Pride Month!   #diversityandinclusion #pridemonth

Our crews installed a 1,300-foot wind fence to mitigate wind speed along our track in Abo Canyon, New Mexico - just one example of our ongoing work to build a safer, stronger network and make it more resistant to weather-related impacts. Abo Canyon is a mountain pass through the Manzano Mountains in central New Mexico. We've had track there since 1908, when our predecessor railroad, Santa Fe, built the line. Abo Canyon experiences high winds, always moving in one direction through the pass. The screen is designed to reduce the wind's impact on our operations. "This project is a great example of how safety and service go hand in hand," Craig Rasmussen, assistant vice president of Engineering, Services and Structure said. "The concentrated wind gusts at this location coming out of Abo Canyon have caused problems in the past. Installing the wind screen will help by lowering the wind impact against the side of trains, which will help keep trains safely flowing through the area." #freight #logistics
