BioMed Realty’s Boston-Cambridge team had a blast participating in this year’s Kendall Square Challenge! The June 12 event was an opportunity to connect with neighbors in Kendall Square and support the broader Cambridge community. More than 40 companies competed to support five local nonprofits: Kids in Tech, InnerCity Weightlifting (ICW), Charles River Conservancy, Cambridge Volunteers, and Technology Exchange Lab. The Kendall Square Challenge included a series of physical and intellectual missions, such as racing kayaks, building structures to match iconic Kendall buildings with wooden blocks, or completing a Kendall maze using a robot pen. Congratulations to the BioMed Realty San Diego team and our project architect Perkins&Will on APEX earning an Honor Award from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Diego Chapter this month! The four-story, 204,000 square foot APEX building, which first opened in 2021, features an iconic and flexible research environment with dramatic views above UTC. The property’s network of outdoor amenity terraces, seating platforms, and amphitheater extend workspaces toward the canyon. Amenities throughout APEX include a fitness center, an outdoor workout area, activity lawn, and a volleyball court. In reviewing the award submission, the AIA jury commented: “The Jury gave the project the highest marks, commending its form, articulation, craft and attention to both detail and restraint. The project’s bold, strong mass is poetically juxtaposed by its levity, appearing to float gracefully.”
