"No one knows what will happen in the coming months. But we must recognize that the attempted assassination of Trump on July 13 is unlikely to be the last violent incident in the 109 days before November 5." Graham Allison writes in The National Interest.

"Iran may have a surprising new president, but the future of Iran still looks like its past." In Foreign Affairs Magazine, Mohammad Ayatollahi Tabaar, Research Fellow with Harvard's Middle East Initiative, argues Pezeshkian is likely to govern "in seamless coordination with the supreme leader—just as Raisi did," with the country maintaining its assertive regional policies and nuclear program, and strengthening its friendships with China and Russia.

Rapid warming in the Arctic — three to four times faster than the global average — is accelerating the release of Arctic greenhouse gas emissions. Total methane and carbon emissions from thawing permafrost and other sources remain uncertain and largely unaccounted for in global carbon budgets, rendering countries emissions targets inaccurate. Despite these uncertainties, even moderate projections for Arctic emissions could undermine the world’s ability to cap warming at 2 degrees Celsius. Hear from Harvard Professor Henry Lee of Harvard's Belfer Center, Environmental Defense Fund Chief Scientist Steven Hamburg, Woodwell Climate Research Center Senior Scientist Sue Natali, and Harvard Kennedy School Professor John Holdren about what can be done. 📺 Watch the panel here: https://bit.ly/4bK1mGT #HarvardClimateActionWeek #ArcticWarming

Veteran NYT foreign correspondent, ex NYT Beijing bureau chief. Producing podcast: Face-Off: US Vs China from Carnegie Corporation at Harvard Kennedy School
Here's a piece I wrote for Foreign Affairs on the collision between a US spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet in 2001. If you think it was tough back then, imagine what would unfold if it happened today. I've delved into the back story of 2001 and looked at the grim outlook going forward.
