I recently gained an interesting new hobby collecting Uranium Glass, commonly found during the late 1800s and Art Deco periods for decorative purposes, having a green tint which glows bright under a UV light. I was curious about the radiation levels and decided to test the samples in the Labs at University of Liverpool | Research, Partnerships and Innovation using a high resolution HPGe detector and Geiger counter, after calibrations I obtained the energy spectrum below. It shows a prominent 185.7 keV peak indicative of Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) Oxide powder used within the glass giving its green appearance. The first four labelled peaks arising from U235 whilst the latter from U238, Thorium X-rays are also visible at the lower end of the energy spectrum. Putting the samples on a dosimeter found them to be at a very safe level of 0.2 µSv/hr - only slightly higher than background levels! #nuclearphysics #uraniumglass ⚛️
