This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the ANS Student Conference at Penn State with the North Carolina State University graduating senior class. During this conference, I presented with my senior design group on developing a Dynamic PRA Model for the PULSTAR Reactor, winning best presentation in the Power Reactor Reliability Operations & Safety. In addition, I presented research results from “ML-LIBS” through undergraduate research with Dr. Wu and Dr. Kautz. This project earned best overall paper! I enjoyed presentations I saw given from other students and the connections made!!

I am pleased to announce that two weeks ago I won the Best Presentation Award in Computational Methods, Machine Learning, and AI for my paper entitled "Parameter Importances from Random Forest Machine Learning for Accident Tolerant Fuel Pool Boiling." A couple weekends ago, I was able to travel to Pennsylvania State University to the American Nuclear Society Student Conference where I was able to present my research on Nuclear Heat Transfer and Machine Learning. My research focuses on improving the safety of light water reactors through improving heat transfer characteristics with advanced materials. I am grateful to all of the members of the University of Wisconsin-Madison American Nuclear Society Chapter who cheered me on and came to listen to my talk. While at Penn State, I spent time visiting the Three Mile Island Plant, where I learned a lot about what happens when a reactor needs to be decommissioned. Furthermore, I was able to talk to many people in the industry, met many other nuclear engineering students from other schools, and listened to other presentations, which I will use the information that I learned to improve my own research. I have the pleasure of working under Professor Juliana Pacheco Duarte, who has helped me tremendously both learning about Thermal Hydraulics and helping me to become a researcher. I would also like to commend Bruno Pinheiro Serrao for all of his help during my research. None of this would be possible without their guidance. I would like to thank all of the staff at the Student Conference for both such a fun and engaging conference, as well as the opportunity for me to present my research and to win this award.

Two weeks ago, ANS at VCU attended the 2024 American Nuclear Society Student Conference at Penn State University in University Park, PA and took home a whopping count of 6 awards: Trevor Franklin for Best Paper, Andre Furkan Erdogan for Best Presentation in Radiation Protection & Medical Physics at the graduate level, Theodore Chu for Best Presentation in Thermal Hydraulics at the graduate level, Ben Impson for Best Presentation in Fuel Cycles, Waste Management & Decomissioning, Cheng Zhang for Best Presentation in Fusion & Plasma Physics, and I won Best Presentation in Nonproliferation, Security, & Safeguards at the undergraduate level for my research summary entitled "Applications of Comprehensive Visual Transport Security Risk Model to Enhance Nuclear Security Regimes"! My presentation was based on my internship project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I am extremely gracious to accept this award, especially as a statistician amongst attendees and presenters who are primarily nuclear engineers. This was also my very first time presenting at an ANS conference. I am proud of my peers for all of the work they do and everything they have accomplished. It was my pleasure to present a talk at the ANS Student Conference opening banquet on the "Unprecedented Opportunities in Nuclear Energy." Nuclear Energy has created outstanding opportunities for me despite graduating in 1992 and entering a field that was in decline. It was a great opportunity to attend this year's ANS Student Conference ! I appreciate all of my fellow students, professors and colleagues for helping me prepare. An especially big thanks to Christopher Reynolds who wrote this paper with me and did the heavy lifting on the machine learning side.
