The solar industry is booming, yet a critical issue known as "Data risk" is undermining its progress, a topic David Trainavicius, Founder and CEO of PVcase delves into in his latest column for Renewable Energy World. With over 30 different entities, including suppliers and consultants, involved in a typical project, information undergoes continuous transformation. Critical data such as topography, irradiation, weather conditions, and technical specifications are shuffled between Excel spreadsheets, CSV files, and PDFs. This happens as projects, spanning months to years, proceed through stages like land acquisition, permitting, and operations. Often, these projects fail to meet initial expectations due to outdated or mismatched data. For instance, a developer might plan for a 100MW installation based on initial data but later find they can only support 70MW, leading to significant financial discrepancies and investor distrust. This "Data risk" not only jeopardizes individual projects but also threatens the industry's growth. Frequent underperformance deters investors and fuels criticism from renewable energy skeptics, posing a significant barrier to our urgent transition to a net-zero economy. The solution isn't just to hire more personnel for data verification— the renewable sector already faces a shortage of skilled workers, and human error remains a risk. Instead, we need a technological revolution. We're on the brink of creating a unified platform that integrates all necessary data for renewable projects, ensuring accuracy and reliability. This platform will prevent data from becoming distorted, enabling projects to be completed faster, with greater precision, and fewer resources.
