AMP is pleased to feature the City of Jackson and its 134-year-old #PublicPower utility in our Member spotlight. Located in southern Ohio, Jackson is situated in Jackson County and has been an AMP Member since 1972. The City of Jackson, named after President Andrew Jackson, was established in 1817. The community experienced an economic and population boom in the late 1880s following the arrival of the railroad. Some of the community’s largest businesses back then were the Star Furnace Company and Glove Iron Company, which used locally sourced coal and iron ore deposits to make their products. Apple production also became a growing industry in Jackson and the surrounding county. With more than 40 farmers producing apples, the community wanted to celebrate their local bounty with an annual festival. Since 1937, the Jackson Apple Festival has welcomed tens of thousands of people each year, and the city’s water tower is painted like an apple as a nod to this celebration. The scholarship was established in memory of Richard H. AMP is pleased to feature the City of Berea and its 19-year-old #PublicPower utility in our Member spotlight. Located in central Kentucky, Berea is situated in Madison County and has been an AMP member since 2016. The City of Berea is historically known as “The Glade” due to its location within a fertile valley. In 1853, Cassius Clay, a large landowner in Madison County, offered his friend Reverend John G. Fee, a free tract of land to move to The Glade. After accepting the offer, Fee eventually established a church, a school and a tiny village and changed the community’s name to Berea. An ardent abolitionist, Fee founded Berea College in 1855. It was the first college in the southern United States to be coeducational and racially integrated, and it also has not charged students tuition since 1892. As the college grew, so did the community. The City of Berea, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, was incorporated in 1890, and eventually became known as the center of the American Crafts Revival. Today, Berea is the “Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky-Where Art’s Alive,” and is home to the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Kentucky Artisan Center. Berea also has miles of bike trails and sidewalks along with many other outdoor recreational facilities. Last week, a crew from the City of Cuyahoga Falls traveled to the Navajo Nation, taking part in Light Up Navajo V, an ongoing initiative of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority - NTUA in coordination with the American Public Power Association (APPA), to extend electric service to Navajo homes for the first time. “Light Up Navajo is a worthwhile mutual aid effort, and I am proud to see our lineworkers lending their skills to help those in need,” said Mike Dougherty, Cuyahoga Falls Electrical Engineer and AMP Board of Trustees member. “Cuyahoga Falls has long participated in mutual aid efforts, both in Ohio and nationally. I know that these experiences are tremendously beneficial to our lineworkers and their professional development, and I know the skills and knowledge they will return with will benefit our community.” Thank you to NTUA and APPA for continuing in efforts to bring power to Navajo Nation households and to the Yellow Springs crew for making the trip and taking part in this important effort. Light Up Navajo V officially launched on April 7, with 42 utilities from 16 states scheduled to participate through July 20.
