AMP is pleased to feature the City of Jackson and its 134-year-old #PublicPower utility in our Member spotlight. Located in southern Ohio, Jackson is situated in Jackson County and has been an AMP Member since 1972. The City of Jackson, named after President Andrew Jackson, was established in 1817. The community experienced an economic and population boom in the late 1880s following the arrival of the railroad. Some of the community’s largest businesses back then were the Star Furnace Company and Glove Iron Company, which used locally sourced coal and iron ore deposits to make their products. Apple production also became a growing industry in Jackson and the surrounding county. With more than 40 farmers producing apples, the community wanted to celebrate their local bounty with an annual festival. Since 1937, the Jackson Apple Festival has welcomed tens of thousands of people each year, and the city’s water tower is painted like an apple as a nod to this celebration. Working in Philadelphia and beyond for a future where all people can thrive and we don't destroy the planet in the process.
Real talk here. While I’ll never judge people for feeling like they can’t speak truth to power, I’m making a call to all my colleagues who either left Philly city government or those still there to start speaking out because the Cherelle Parker administration is taking #philly down a dangerous path. Watch the Fox 29 Philadelphia, WTXF video in this post and think about these two points. 1. I dare anyone with any experience on city government or community organizing to look at this 13 week cleaning program and think, “That’s going to work.” The hyperbole about how “historic” it is to bring these departments together or how “huge” the investment is feels almost Trumpian. We all know that these big publicity stunts don’t solve anything and will keep a block clean for a few days, maybe a week, while actually accomplishing nothing. Why is it so amazing that the city is doing it’s basic job and doing cleaning, just once? And what about the fine print that now that they cleaned the block it’s up to the residents to keep it clean? We need real systemic solutions and not these smoke and mirror shows that get a bunch of people’s hopes up who have had such little hope over the past 4 years. This could do more damage than doing nothing. 2. Parker’s declaration at the end of this video about not letting the critics divide and conquer “us” is chilling. I’m alarmed by this strong woman tactic of making an us vs them argument that anyone who criticizes “us” is the enemy. Again, I challenge anyone with any experience in city government or community organizing to watch this video and not raise the red flags. If you do watch and that happens please speak out. I am so thankful to my strong community at Circular Philadelphia and my co director Samantha Wittchen who are willing to speak out when needed. We’re at a critical point in Philadelphia to get it right for the next chapter of progression in this city. And everything about this news clip screams that we are on a dangerous path. https://lnkd.in/eH_ynH4C

Happy Wednesday!! 😀 IT'S AMERICAN REDNECK DAY!! Author | C. Knighten While folks here in the south may celebrate this day a little harder than most, this is still a day celebrated Nationwide. We can credit The Blue Collar Comedy Tour with inducting many a fan into the kingdom of Redneckdom! People who are often called rednecks do not live up to the derogatory roots of this somewhat slang term. Though, to be honest, there are some that do! ‘Redneck’ is a term applied to white American people who are perceived to be unsophisticated or crass, particularly those from rural backgrounds, farmers and those who worked in fields. Nothing could be further from the truth!! The origins of this term, 'redneck' actually stems from the Battle of Blair Mountain, in 1921. It turned out to be the nastiest uprising since the Civil War. 10,000 to 20,000 coal miners looking for the right to unionize, went to war with labor enforcers. The battle lasted a week and involved the National Guard. The coal miners wore red bandanas when they marched and were labeled 'rednecks' because of their kerchiefs! It is easy to understand how and why people might associate the word with being backwoods and ignorant, but that really isn't what it meant at all. Let's all remember where we would be without vegetables, cows and coal and much, much more! GREAT QUOTES FROM JEFF FOXWORTHY: 👩🌾 You night be a redneck if you have spent more on your pickup truck than your education! 👨🌾 If your neighbors think you are a detective because a cop always brings you home! 🧑🌾 If you ever made change in the offering plate at church...you might be a redneck! 🧑🌾 If you own a home with wheels on it and several cars without...you might be a redneck! While people will misuse this term for years to come, if we all laugh together, it doesn't matter where it started or how. What matters is that we have learned to respect and care for one another regardless of our backgrounds or where we are from! #dynamicpressurewashing #roofcleaning #softwashing #residential #commercial #siding #concrete #driveways #sidewalks #patios #decks #fences #tractortrailers #semitrucks #fleetservice #madison #huntsville #decatur #hamptoncove

It’s easy to blame budget as the reason we can’t make change, but the truth is that nine times out of 10, the real culprit is a lack of leadership. Great cities require a new type of leadership—one that understands the payoff of investing in JOY. If you let me brag for a minute, I’ll tell you a story that illustrates my point. Back in 2017, Scott was preparing to unveil the Gaslight District to the city of Cambridge. He had earmarked $500,000 for the launch, which he would typically use for advertising, a few small events, and so on. But this idea of joy and community was already starting to take shape in our minds so instead of going with a traditional marketing campaign, he decided to throw a big, flashy, FREE party with the works—food, drinks, music, and even an air show. Scott intentionally went overboard, hoping to give our quiet community a shock of joy. Boy did he ever. Fifteen thousand people, out of a population of 100,000, attended and had a great time. Cambridge, it turned out, could celebrate and experience joy! Beyond the big boost to community well-being, Scott’s condos sold out in a few days, proving that Infrastructure for the Human Spirit also delivers great financial returns for the investment. Got a story about a great leader in your community? Brag about them in the comments below. #citybuilding #urbandesign #urbandevelopment #urbanplanning #architecture #realestatedevelopment #socialconnection #placemaking #joyfulcities #joyexperiments https://lnkd.in/gY43SFkX

Baltimore’s historic buildings are being damaged by people’s pee. The City is planning on installing more public restrooms downtown, which is a great—and sorely needed—solution, and one rooted in the past. More than a century ago, cities like Baltimore were busy installing public ”comfort stations” for this very reason. Nearly every US city abandoned these public restrooms, branding them, in turn, as “nuisances.” Although the article mentions that the problem is the acidity of urine, it turns out that most human urine is circumneutral in pH and usually no more acidic than rainwater. Rather than “acid,” the problem is likely to be due to the destructive actions of salts, from the urine, that have a propensity to destroy porous masonry. A big component of urine is urea, an organic salt. Urine also has inorganic chloride, sodium, and potassium ions, as well, which help to form salts. https://lnkd.in/gx8a_DJA

Hacked Houston development sign tells drivers: 'Go f — k yourself' On the off chance that you can't take the intensity, escape Houston. A hacked electronic development sign at a bustling Houston city intersection left drivers ogling with its emphatic advance notice: "Because of Climate. GO F — K YOURSELF." The stunning message spread across a changing screen at a corner on the city's west side immediately took off on the web, as staggered Houstonians who got a brief look at the forceful showcase hoped to see who was mindful. The establishing manager in-head of the Houston Arrival, Mizanur Rahman, was first to post photos of the sign's frightening message on X. "Well this made my drive to our office earlier today rather engaging," Rahman composed Monday morning as the mercury moved to 93 degrees. The sign stayed unaltered with its strange and striking mandate in plain view north of three hours after the fact, as per Rahman's post. The web rushed to share the post, with numerous online entertainment clients ringing in with the amount they love Houston's mentality. It's indistinct who the comedian liable for the message is and whether it was only a trick or they genuinely had an unresolved issue with the intensity Houston has encountered this late spring. The city has recorded record highs, having set another high temperature of 109 degrees last month. A Houston Public Works worker told Chron the gear controlling the sign's message is inside a locked box connected to the sign — meaning whoever composed the profane note either been able to open the crate or had the option to hack the framework. The self-assured message may likewise be in light of a regulation Texas Gov. Greg Abbott endorsed in June that supersedes nearby measures that guarantee open air laborers get ordinary water breaks. #HeatwaveRecord #ExtremeHeat #HoustonWeather #TemperatureHighs #WeatherUpdate #HeatWaveAlert #WeatherRecord #HotWeather #TexasHeat #HeatwaveSafety #ClimateChange #GovernorAbbott #LaborerRights #HeatWaveImpact #WeatherNews #WeatherPatterns #TemperatureRecords #HeatwaveChallenge #WeatherWarnings #PublicSafety

Join us as we navigate through the complexities of renewable energy solutions, environmental impacts, and the local response to this technological advancement. #EnergyEvolution #BatteryStorage #ChristianCountyCurrents #RenewableRevolution #CommunityCharge Proposed battery storage facility causing concern for neighbors in Christian County OZARK, Mo. (KY3) - Neighbors in Christian County are up in arms over a proposal to build a large battery storage facility near Ozark. They say only a handful of households were even told about it ahead of time. The project has been proposed by Black Mountain Energy Storage and if approved it would sit behind the substation off Old Prospect Road and Elk Valley. The facility would store lithium ion batteries and the people living nearby told KY3 they’re upset not only with the potential environmental impacts but they say they barely got any notice. “If it is safe, that’s great, but prove it to us,” said area HOA president Jack Peavey. Black Mountain Energy Storage wants to build on 30+ acres of land near Ozark for a lithium ion battery storage facility. Those in the area like Kendra Blankenship say there was little notice about an upcoming Planning and Zoning meeting. “So there’s approximately five to seven homes that were actually notified,” said Blankenship. “Nobody else outside of that radius had any idea until we started speaking about it.” The facility would be surrounded by 8 foot fences and would contain more than 50 large battery containers. Blankenship and others in the area say they worry about some of the impacts a battery storage facility would have on the environment.

You know that saying "Everything's bigger in Texas"? Well, that's a true statement, but the only thing bigger than Texas is the Texan-State pride. Texas might just be my favorite example of a successful #lovemark, I mean how many other States do you know that offer waffles shaped like the State itself? You can read all about it in my recent blog with TEDxUTAustin: "Texas-sized waffles, beavers and everything in between." https://lnkd.in/gGXmvT9R

1moWhen I was young, I stayed in Jackson while I was a co-op student for the Southern Ohio Coal Company. The people are very friendly and I had a great time. I still go there once in a while to have lunch or dinner at one of their restaurants. 134 years, isn’t that awesome! Congrats to the City of Jackson!
