As the 2024 Summer Olympic games wrap up, much has been made about how the United States performed in the medal count compared to other countries. We've marveled at seeing the women's gymnastics team clinch the gold and seeing others, such as U.S. Olympic Swimmer Katie Ledecky, cement their spot in Olympic history. These elite athletes train and practice for years for a few moments in the spotlight. Benjamin Dakters recently joined AMP as a Project Accounting and Procurement Analyst. In this role he will be actively involved in sourcing and procurement process, helping maintain project billing across the organization. He will also provide insight into business trends, perform root cause analyses, and work with business users to transform business requirements into appropriate solutions. Prior to joining AMP, Benjamin served as a Financial Representative for Northwestern Mutual. AMP is pleased to feature the City of Williamstown and its 126-year-old #PublicPower utility in our Member spotlight. Located in northern Kentucky, Williamstown is situated in Grant County and has been an AMP Member since 2007. The City of Williamstown was founded on June 12, 1820. The town is named after Captain William Arnold, a Revolutionary War veteran who had a major impact on building the foundation of the city. William Arnold settled in the area and became the first Sheriff of Grant County. He provided land and materials for the community to be formed, including two-and-a-half acres for the county’s public buildings, timber for houses for three years, and firewood and stone for seven years. Then, in 1821, Arnold organized Grant Seminary, the first educational facility in Williamstown. Today, the William Arnold Log Cabin Museum, a building that once served as Arnold’s home, is open to the public and displays household items and other artifacts that he owned. The Village of Monroeville’s 2024 Safety Town wrapped up with graduation last week with more than 25 students participating in this year’s event. As a part of Safety Town, the Monroeville Electric Department provided an electrical tailgate talk explaining the hazards associated with electricity. Students saw equipment used to keep lineworkers safe and learned to never go near a downed wire, never fly a kite near overhead wires, and always call 911 when something looks dangerous. #WeArePublicPower #PublicPower #CommunityPowered

One of the most distinctive aspects of working in public power, according to Teitt, is the “singularity of purpose.” Unlike the private sector, public power organizations are driven by a mission to serve their respective communities and provide safe and reliable power. “You feel like what you are doing is for the benefit of something outside of yourself or your company,” Teitt said. This week, AMP hosted a Basic 2 Lineworker Training course at AMP headquarters in Columbus, where 24 apprentice lineworkers had the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills on the topics of enhanced climbing skills, installation of equipment, live-line equipment and more. Lineworkers in attendance were from the AMP Member communities of the City of Columbus, Dover, Grafton, Kutztown, City of Napoleon, Borough Of Quakertown, St. Clairsville, St. Marys, Versailles, Woodsfield, Village of Yellow Springs and Borough Of Zelienople. AMP staff and AMP Member elected officials who are part of the American Public Power Association (APPA)’s Policy Makers Council (PMC) participated in the organization’s summer fly-in event in Washington, D.C. last week. During the event, PMC members participated in meetings with elected officials and congressional staff to advance public power’s legislative and regulatory agendas. In addition to AMP staff, the fly-in event was attended by Paul Hach, City of Painesville City Council Member, and Montpelier Mayor Steve Yagelski. Both are also members of the Ohio Municipal Electric Association (OMEA) Board of Directors. Hach, Yagelski and AMP staff met with U.S. Representatives Troy Balderson and Marcy Kaptur and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown. They also met with key congressional staff members in the offices of U.S. Representatives Dave Joyce, Mike Carey and Bob Latta. During the meetings, Hach and Yagelski provided information and updates on important issues currently facing public power. #WeArePublicPower #PublicPower #CommunityPowered
