About us
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), headquartered in Chicago, is a non-partisan, not-for-profit technical institute and trade association established in 1921 to serve the structural steel design community and construction industry in the United States. AISC’s mission is to make structural steel the material of choice by being the leader in structural-steel-related technical and market-building activities, including: specification and code development, research, education, technical assistance, quality certification, standardization, market development, and advocacy. AISC has a long tradition of service to the steel construction industry providing timely and reliable information. As part of AISC's mission, we emphasize: --Increasing the structural steel industry's share of the construction market --Unifying the industry with a common purpose --Increasing the structural steel industry’s share of the construction market --Supporting and improving the ability of the structural steel industry to be both innovative and competitive in a worldwide construction market Since its establishment, AISC has conducted its numerous activities with a scrupulous sense of public responsibility. For this reason, and because of the high caliber of its staff, the Institute enjoys a close working relationship with architects, engineers, code officials and educators who recognize its professional status in the fields of specification writing, structural research, design development and performance standards. AISC represents the total experience, judgment, and strength of the entire domestic industry of steel fabricators, distributors, and producers. The scope and success of its activities could not be achieved by any one member of the industry. The nation shares the rewards of these activities – through better, safer and more economical buildings, bridges and other structures framed in structural steel. Smarter. Stronger. Steel.

Structural engineers have a vital and valuable role in projects and society. Celebrate the profession with the “We SEE Above and Beyond” campaign, brought to you by the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA)! Explore the myriad ways structural engineers support the vision and construction of the varied and many places where we all live, work, and play.
There's more involved in a construction project than what we can see. "We SEE Above and Beyond" is our campaign to highlight the art and science that structural engineers provide, to celebrate the experiences they create and to show what's behind the wall, above the ceiling, or underground. Follow us to SEE (Structural Engineering Excellence) at its best. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gkZF7yda #NCSEA #StructuralEngineering #WeSEEAboveandBeyond #StructuralEngineeringExcellence

Who doesn't love to see sparks fly? 🎇 Last week, Southern New Jersey Steel (SNJS) hosted an exciting workshop for architects and engineers. Attendees learned how architectural drawings transform into shop drawings, engaged in project Q&A, and got hands-on experience with some surface prep and welding. A big thank you to everyone who attended! American Institute of Steel Construction Southern New Jersey Steel JKRP Architects JT Engineering

AISC is proud to welcome Joshua Schultz, PE, PhD, LEED AP and Ashley Thrall, PhD--the inaugural Innovation Scholars!--to our Chicago headquarters for research and industry engagement activities over the next few weeks. Schultz, an associate professor at Gonzaga University, is spending his residency exploring the development of simplified design aids that, among other uses, will help make steel education even more practical for undergraduate students. Thrall, the Myron and Rosemary Noble Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, will focus on engaging with the industry to understand the most pressing research needs when it comes to the rapid construction of sustainable and resilient steel buildings and bridges. Stay tuned for updates about their projects! Want to learn more about the new Innovation Scholar program? Visit aisc.org/innovationscholar for the details.

Imagine installing an 8,625-lb architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) staircase--with only a 5-by-8-ft freight elevator to lift the pieces into place! This Atlanta office building staircase, fabricated and erected by Porter Steel, Inc. in Lilburn, Ga., is one of three projects for which AISC member erectors won 2024 Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) Project of the Year awards. The other two are the Cape Canaveral Space Force Base, Launch Complex 36, erected by Harrisburg, Penn.-based S&R Enterprises, LLC; and the adaptive reuse of Phoenix’s Moxy hotel, erected by All Things Metal, LLC. Read about each of these winning projects at aisc.org/seaa-poy-24, and visit aisc.org/puzzles to see how fast you can assemble the Atlanta staircase project for yourself--no freight elevator required. Congratulations to all the winners!

AISC Director of Workforce Development Jennifer Traut-Todaro, S.E., LEED AP is the newest president of the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI)! As president, Traut-Todaro intends to bring together the Illinois structural engineering community and encourage members--new and old--to get involved. As a proud co-founder of the Women in Structural Engineering (WiSE) committee, Traut-Todaro wants to mirror the committee’s successful engagement throughout the rest of the organization. Steel product environmental product declarations (EPDs) are about to become even more accurate and prevalent, thanks to a $6.4 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency! AISC, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) are collaborating to develop life cycle inventory and EPD generator tools that can automate the production of steel product EPDs, create an EPD repository, and update the steel product category rule (PCR). They are just a few of many recipients of a nearly $160 million program to reduce climate pollution from the manufacturing of construction materials and products. Read more about this initiative and grant at aisc.org/epa-epds.

When disaster strikes, call the steel industry. In early May, a tanker fire compromised the structural integrity of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge over Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Conn. Within days of the fire, Canam Bridges submitted a project bid for the replacement bridge--by mid-August, they will deliver the new spans to the jobsite! The American structural steel industry is uniquely poised to mobilize and tackle urgent infrastructure challenges as soon as they arise. AISC is proud to represent an industry that shows its commitment to maintaining and rebuilding critical infrastructure. Read more about the role of Canam and Yonkers Contracting in the I-95 Fairfield Avenue Bridge recovery in a CTPost op-ed by AISC’s own Brandon Chavel: https://ow.ly/w6Z850SHslj Image credit: Canam Bridges
