😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 😲 This will be a controversial post but feel free to comment and add your opinion. I believe this issue is a lot deeper than people often think. The question: Who is the cause for much the detailing in the US been transitioned to using lower price detailers domestic and/or overseas? My answer, it is complicated but overall, the root cause for this shift is.... ourselves or more specifically the owners of US detailing firms. Not the fabricator, not the GC or some other organization. Why do I say such a crazy thing? The decision made by fellow detailing firm owners to transition from using all in house qualified detailers to cheaper non-qualified detailers is the decision of the detailing firm owner. You may say "Well they had to go this route to due price pressure from XYZ client" While I agree that may be a determining factor in their decision as a business owner the decision lies with them. They have 100% responsibility for every decision, policy and plan made by their company. You may argue if they did not find this cheaper route they would go out of business because they would not have work.... I honestly do not believe this to be true. Do some quick research on how many fabricators are in the US alone. Not to mention other potential client bases. There is plenty of work and opportunity out there and there always has been. Sooo yes, I am saying if a client want's a much lower price there are other options. Tell them no, tell them to take a hike, explain to them why things cost what they cost. If they don't like your price they don't have to buy from you. You may say I cannot do that.... Well, you can & I do it all the time. It is an aggressive approach but it also keeps my US firm employed & busy with great clients that understand and value the work we provide. All this being said, back to the original question. Why are fellow detailing firms the cause of detailing being transitioned to a cheaper business model? If one firm lower's their prices significantly other firms have less options to continue to compete. Basically, your neighboring detailing firm that transitioned from appropriately priced detailing to lower and lower priced is slowing killing all their neighbors. It becomes a race to the bottom. Looking at some history this is the exact strategy that Rockefeller used with Standard Oil to take 90% of the market share of the oil industry in the late 1800's. He would lower prices so much near a competitor that they would go out of business. Only difference here is that Rockefeller did it as one man. The detailing industry is slowly doing it to itself without even knowing it. How do we fix this? That's the real tough question. I have ideas but this post is already long. 😁 Let me know your thoughts in the comments if you agree please share this post. #steeldetailing #steelindustry #steelconstruction #steelfabrication #structuralsteel #sds2 #allplan #tekla #bocad #nisd #aisc #questions

A big thanks to Shaun Eller at Ohio Gratings, Inc. for hosting my team for a tour of their facility. I know we all learned a lot and really enjoyed seeing how the pros do it. Getting out into the real world like this is vital to helping your detailers learn how their every day work effects everyone else's. #steel #steeldetailing #steelconstruction #steelfabrication #grating #learning #fun

Another job out for approval. Done in Bocad. This one needs some field measurements but should be pretty quick to fix up when it come back. Interesting project that has both FRP and steel connecting together. The long vertical posts are FRP. The connection macros made most of this job a breeze! #steeldetailing #steelfabrication #steelconstruction #steelindustry #structuralsteel #structuralengineering #bocad #bocadUS #schullerandcompany #superawesomefabricator

You may have noticed I have not posted recently. My team & I have been deep in a hole learning a new detailing program. At this point I have done 5 projects with the program and I have to say I am really happy and impressed with the software & support. These pictures are from a job I just sent for approval this morning. Biggest job I have done to date on the software and more to come. Big thanks to the SCHULLER & Company team for all the fast support & one on one training they have given us. Egon W. Vincent OURY Helmut Schuller PS. If you are unhappy with the software you are using detailing or otherwise consider looking around... there is other stuff out there. #steeldetailing #steelconstruction #bocad #learning #software #steelfabrication #steelerection #aisc #nisd #fun
