Last month the Aalo Atomics team gathered at our Idaho Falls office for a week of presentations, planning, workshops, field trips, and team bonding. Here's a little video glimpse into some of the activities!
Our mission is to make nuclear cheap enough to power the majority of the world's clean energy needs, while maintaining safety. We've identified a path to achieve 3¢ / kWh electricity, enabling rapid real-world deployment.

This week Aalo visited a 1 GW natural gas plant! The difference between this and an equivalent nuclear plant was stark. Here’s what stood out to us: ➡️ Natural gas plants are staffed by only a handful of people (typically < 20 at a given time). In an equivalent nuclear plant, there would be ~500 people on site. ➡️ The security at natural gas plants includes keycard access and security cameras. The equivalent nuclear plants have sniper rifle towers and ~100 armed guards. ➡️ Operational costs can range between 1.5-4.5 cents / kWh. It’s incredible how low this is considering the huge amount of natural gas that must constantly be mined, refined, and transported to the site. This speaks to the maturity of the infrastructure built out for natural gas over the past 100 years. ➡️ Turbines typically require maintenance every 30k-50k hours, or 3-6 years. We went inside the turbine room and it was like being inside the belly of a dragon. Incredible engineering to get the turbine to last that long without maintenance under those conditions (more extreme than what a steam turbine is subjected to at a nuclear plant). ➡️ Natural gas plant owners do sometimes perform remote centralized operations for a fleet of turbines. Good inspiration for a micro-reactor company. ➡️ When most US natural gas plants were built, coal was the largest source of electricity in the US. But natural gas surpassed coal as the largest energy producer in the country in 2016. Very impressive to see the growth that natural gas has had in the past 30 years. Time will tell what this looks like for nuclear over the next 30! Thanks to Wheeler Gibson for setting this up for the team Aalo Atomics.

Aalo is officially on the NRC website! We recently submitted the Regulatory Engagement Plan for our first commercial project to the US nuclear regulator: The NRC. What does this mean? The REP is a document that outlines how we intend to license the first commercial installment of the Aalo-1. This will be a 7x Aalo-1 reactor fleet, totaling 70 MWe to power our first customer located in Idaho (more to be announced soon). Note that the timelines described here are targets. Check out our blog post to learn more, here: https://lnkd.in/gREwb7z6 Find us on the NRC’s site here: https://lnkd.in/ghvesYh4 Or read our REP here: https://lnkd.in/gz-vH77W Amazing work by Amir Afzali, Asmaa Salem Farag, Yasir Arafat, and the rest of the Aalo Atomics team 🙌

Why is the Aalo-1 reactor design so great? How is it that Aalo-1 can have such an inherently safe, strong fuel temperature negative feedback coefficient? Learn about the cell effect, the warm neutron effect, and more in the latest Aalo Atomics blog post, by Gavin Ridley! https://lnkd.in/gYsmkw8N
COMING SOON? Aalo Atomics is developing this advanced sodium-cooled reactor that draws inspiration from our MARVEL microreactor. The 30 MW thermal reactor will be optimized for mass manufacturing and use established commercial supply chains to help deliver clean, low-cost heat and power. The company recently signed a siting agreement with INL to build its first reactor at the lab for hydrogen production testing. Construction could start as early as this decade. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e6aYQVhn
Learn more about Aalo and our approach in the video below. More to come!
We made a video! Aalo Atomics is a young company with a lot to prove, but we want to get in the habit of communicating what we’re doing, and why we’re doing it. In the next few months, we’ll start work on our full-scale physical prototype. We’re going to have to overcome a lot of engineering challenges, including the creation of our automated refueling hardware, heat exchangers, and more. Expect videos, tweets, and long-form posts about what we’re building, what problems we’re facing, and what solutions we’re testing to make the best nuclear systems we can. Today marks a major milestone in our journey at Aalo Atomics: We've just been granted a DOE-ID Siting MOU! This is the first step towards the deployment of an Aalo-1 reactor at the INL site. We’re aiming to start construction as soon as 2026. The next steps will include: ✅ Selecting a specific site ✅ Entering into a property agreement with DOE ✅ Performing environmental and cultural reviews ✅ Completing a non-nuclear full-scale test reactor ✅ Receiving regulatory permission to start construction We strongly believe the world needs more nuclear energy, and the reception of the DOE and INL to our proposed plans is incredibly encouraging. 🍾🥂Amazing turnout at the grand opening of our Idaho Falls Office. We have strategically organized our product engineering group locally in Idaho to boost development and deployment of our first Aalo-1 reactors here. Thanks to Jess Gehin from Idaho National Laboratory and for a warm welcome speech. With a signed Strategic Partnership Project Agreement between Aalo Atomics and INL, we can’t wait to formally collaborate. They say- It takes a village to deploy a new reactor. We were honored by the presence of many local leaders at the event and we are thrilled to work with them in bringing this amazing technology to life. #nuclearenergy #nuclear #nuclearjobs #nuclearengineering #energy #netzerotransition #team #collaboration #newbeginning #newbusiness
