Germany and Hungary continued their canoe sprint rivalry as both nations managed to claim two gold medals on the opening day of finals here today.
Emotions ran high here today as Austria secured an unexpected silver behind Russia in the synchronised swimming duets final and winners Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri dedicated the medal to Vanessa Sahinovic, who was seriously injured by a bus in the Athletes Village last week along with two other team members.

Russia continued their excellent start to the Greco Roman wrestling events here today, following on from their success on the opening day of competition with a further two golds, as hosts Azerbaijan also won gold and silver.

The countdown to Europe’s first continental multi-sport Games is officially over after the Opening Ceremony of Baku 2015, which saw a sold-out Olympic Stadium in the Azerbaijan’s capital city treated to spectacular performances, including from international music star Lady Gaga.
Vanessa Sahinovic, who was the most seriously injured of the three Austrian synchronised swimmers involved in a bus accident in the Baku 2015 Athletes’ Village, is now in a stable condition in a hospital in Vienna, Austria following surgery.
