May 3 - Summer Youth Olympic champion Nicholas Hough has been named among the 28-strong squad of athletes confirmed by Athletics Australia to compete at the Kazan 2013 Universiade in July.
May 2 - Swimming Canada have named eight Olympians in their squad of 38 for the Universiade in Kazan this July, as many of the nation's student athletes take advantage of being encouraged to compete in both the Universiade and the World Championships in Barcelona just a fortnight later.

March 20 - Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the Tatarstan capital city of Kazan is on its way to becoming Russia's premier sporting city following an inspection of facilities which will be used for the 2013 Universiade in the city.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
