The IX Central & South American Championship in Asunción, Paraguay, from 24-30 June, was the setting where the first ITF Adapted Taekwon-Do competition was held on the American continent.

Since its creation in 2019, the ITF Inclusion Committee developed official Adapted Taekwon-Do Courses, based on the Adapted Taekwon-Do Instructor Guide, in order to train instructors from around the world about the main characteristics of different conditions and pathologies of their students, and instruct on the appropriate pedagogy and didactics to conduct classes dedicated to people with disabilities.

At the same time, during the last two years, joint work was carried out between the Inclusion Committee and the ITF Umpires Committee to develop the Adapted Taekwon-Do Competition Rules, which were recently published.

After the approval of the Rules, the next step was to prepare the ITF umpires which was achieved by a specifically designed online course, the Adapted Taekwon-Do Umpire Course.

During the course, in addition to addressing the characteristics of different conditions and pathologies, the care to be taken into account for competitors was pointed out and important recommendations were provided when intervening during competitions.

It was also explained that the purpose of these Competition Rules, in addition to providing equal opportunities for all participants with special abilities, is to guarantee safety, respect and fairness.

At the IX Central & South American Championship in Paraguay, the umpires reviewed the rules and main concepts once again. The athletes participated in two modalities: forms/patterns and the so called "Free Skills" category, the latter could be compared to Pre-arranged Sparring.

To ensure a fair and safe competition for all athletes, interviews were carried out prior to the competition with the therapeutic companions, the coaches, and the competitors. The competitors for their part, had to pass a specific evaluation and preparation process in order to become familiar with the environment of a tournament of these characteristics where the number of the public, noises, lights and other factors that could affect them.

All participants had to present the disability certificate issued by the corresponding authorities of the country of origin and a current medical fitness certificate.

Due to the complexity when dividing into categories, as this was the first experience, children, teenagers and adults who had pathologies or conditions with similar characteristics were allowed to participate.

The experience of this first Adapted Taekwon-Do competition can hardly be forgotten and only reinforced the notion that conscious, serious and professional work, in addition to an enormous degree of sensitivity and empathy, allowed the inclusion of people with disabilities. And they confirmed once again the famous quote of General Choi Hong Hi, father of Taekwon-Do, when he stated that "Taekwon-Do is for everyone."
