It started when I was getting my pre-holiday spray tan. “Who are you going with?” the lady asked when I said I was off to the Maldives for a week. I told her the truth — no one — which left her speechless.

And it seems from the reaction of many that a woman travelling truly alone (not for work, not to visit friends or family) is still something of an anomaly. But what other people think is the last thing on my mind as I arrive by speedboat to the Four Seasons Resort at Kuda Huraa, one of the tiny islands that make up the Maldives.
