Hi Joseph,
Thanks for asking!
I'm not sure there's much to my 'how did you get published' story beyond saying that I wrote a story somebody wanted to publish.
On paper, my breakthrough into short fiction was on the fast side, if you're just looking at stories published. My first pro sale was to Daily Science Fiction, and then several months later things took off with pro sales to Strange Horizons, Asimov's, etc. and many more since then.
On the other hand, I'd been submitting stories to magazines since I was fourteen, with a break when I was playing music full time. Things went fast once they got rolling in 2012, but I had lots of stories under my belt by then.
In my opinion, the only way to get published is to write, write, write and submit, submit, submit. Finish stories, then finish more stories. That sounds glib, but I used to start stories all the time and then abandon them. Some people swear by a stint slush reading at magazines, and others swear by attending one of the genre workshops (Clarion being the gold standard, but there are other shorter/more affordable ones such as Viable Paradise and the one at the University of Kansas). I'll just swear by writing a lot, submitting a lot, and rolling with the rejections until they turn into acceptances.(less)

I do a singer/songwriter thing and then my band plays the same songs louder and faster. I spent a long time touring, and I've played a lot of DIY venues, so this is definitely a love letter to punk spaces. In my experience, most of those spaces have a wide variety of music coming through, so even though the cover says "rock" I tried to capture that breadth. There's a hidden soundtrack in the chapter titles too...

"Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather" won the Nebula!

On Saturday night, my story “Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather” won the Nebula Award for best short story. This was my fourth Nebula win —and my third consecutive, in three different categories!— but my first for short story. The ceremony and the conference were online, also for the third year in a row. The Nebula is given by the members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association— my fellow

Topics Mentioning This Author

“It never takes longer than a few minutes, when they get together, for everyone to revert to the state of nature, like a party marooned by a shipwreck. That's what a family is. Also the storm at sea, the ship, and the unknown shore. And the hats and the whiskey stills that you make out of bamboo and coconuts. And the fire that you light to keep away the beasts.”
Michael Chabon, The Yiddish Policemen's Union

“Whenever the horse stopped (which it did very often), he fell off in front; and, whenever it went on again (which it generally did rather suddenly), he fell off behind. Otherwise he kept on pretty well, except that he had a habit of now and then falling off sideways; and, as he generally did this on the side on which Alice was walking, she soon found that it was the best plan not to walk quite close to the horse.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass: Illustrated by John Tenniel

“If you are very lucky, you're allowed to be in certain places during just the right season of your life: by the sea for the summer when you're seven or eight and full of the absolute need to swim until dark and exhaustion close their hands together, cupping you in between.”
Jonathan Carroll, Bones of the Moon

“Every room I've lived in since I was given my own room at eleven was lined with, and usually overfull of, books. My employment in bookstores was always continuous with my private hours: shelving and alphabetizing, building shelves, and browsing-- in my collection and others-- in order to understand a small amount about the widest possible number of books. Such numbers of books are constantly acquired that constant culling is necessary; if I slouch in this discipline, the books erupt. I've also bricked myself in with music--vinyl records, then compact discs. My homes have been improbably information-dense, like capsules for survival of a nuclear war, or models of the interior of my own skull. That comparison--room as brain-- is one I've often reached for in describing the rooms of others, but it began with the suspicion that I'd externalized my own brain, for anyone who cared to look.”
Jonathan Lethem, The Disappointment Artist: Essays

“A half-read book is a half-finished love affair.”
David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

Hey! I didn't even notice that you were from NoVa. I've read all the short stories for The Alternative World group, and now I'm working my way through the novellas and novelettes. I won't make the same commitment for full-length fiction.
Are you going to the Nebulas? Nebula weekend is in Arlington this year.
Oh, and yes! Silently and Very Fast was fantastic.
