it was ok

I loved the idea. The execution was kinda poor. Straight-up annoying. Several lines were extremely kiddish. I almost put the book down after the first few chapters. Simply couldn't go on. It was like the book was written for a 12-year old.

The only thing that kept me going is the mystery. I had to find out what happens. I like the way the characters grow throughout, but things they feel or say sound highly unrealistic. The bond they all develop with Vera so quickly, and the fact that everybody has only positive intentions, is too convenient for Vera and the author herself.

She managed to neatly tie everything up in a bow at the end, which is probably why so many people liked it. The end of a story tends to stay with us, regardless of how we felt during the read, sometimes.

Am I glad I read it to the end? I'm not sure. There were some heartwarming lines here and there, but that was all. Perhaps it can be adapted into a Comedy movie. I think if these characters are portrayed comically, those dialogues would actually work.

A cute story, but an annoying read -- that's all I have to say.

14.75% "I must say, it is a tad bit unrealistic at times. This rather old lady is just withholding evidence from the police for no good reason. At the very least, the readers need to be a given a strong reason. Perhaps she wants to get famous by being involved, so her tea shop would actually get world famous? But that’s just a guess at this point."

24.0% "I'm sure the story itself should be good, but the way it's written is so annoying. It's like they're trying too hard to be funny, but it just sounds like it's written for a 9 or maybe 12 year old. But then again, there is some vocabulary that is too much for a 12 year old."
February 21, 2024 –
31.0% "I see a little too much praise for her food. Surely, even if Vera can't be modest, I don't find it convincing that the food is described the same way in others' POV as well..."
February 21, 2024 –
36.0% "I must, the book is getting a little less annoying. The others’ POV is better than Vera’s in this aspect.
But then, there’s still some things that are exaggerated beyond necessity — a two year old’s sudden change in behaviour with Vera, Riki being never thought of a rich person’s problems before in all his life, Oliver’s obliviousness with Marshall’s life… idk, some things I’m just not buying."
February 22, 2024 –
52.0% "The part I still find a little annoying is — the author explains in detail even the most implicit details, in every POV. Things that can be conveyed in fewer words and described in very verbose thoughts of the characters."
February 23, 2024 –
53.0% "“Anyway, it’s probably empowering to be able to lug such a huge and heavy burden without any help.” — What? Vera doesn’t want to tell Julia that the luggage has wheels, because it’s probably empowering? Sometimes the writing is so silly that I just want to stop reading!"
February 23, 2024 –
56.0% "“And that’s inflaaation,” Emma sings. ---- I'm sorry but unless Emma is Sheldon Cooper, there's no way she can say that as a 2 year old! Would it hurt to be a little realistic?"
February 24, 2024 –
68.0% "Everything is just too convenient for Vera. Too good to be true. I’m not sure why I’m still reading - I guess when you look past the kiddish nature of the narration, the mystery motivates you to get to the end. The end reveal better be worth it!"
February 25, 2024 –
75.0% "I wonder why I'm still reading these rambling, and exaggerated paragraphs. But then, occasionally, I see a good, heartwarming sentence. For example: "And somehow, in teaching Emma that flaws can be turned into something unique and beautiful, Sana, too, begins to heal.""
February 25, 2024 –
92.0% "Nobody needs any proof! When someone says anything, the listener goes -- "I know he's telling the truth, I've always known."

Vera has this superpower with everyone, and Julia has it with Oliver. Very very convenient. If you can just read minds, why bother to investigate at all? I swear, I am ONLY reading to know how it ends! It's entertaining too, but it's like, I'm annoyed that I'm able to read on!"
February 25, 2024 –
100.0% "The end was good. Left a smile on my face. I guess the story deserves some appreciation. Characters were nice, I guess it's only the writing that I have to pick a bone with it. Unnecessary descriptions which sound rather kiddish in several places. Other than that, it was quite alright."

Happy that I'm not the only one. I think I'm not going to finish the book. Were you able to get to the end?
