it was ok
bookshelves: not-interested, disappointed

I heard this was a funny mystery full of complex, lovable characters with a heartwarming family.

I heard I would salivate over the many descriptions of food.

I heard that it would be light and fun and that I would laugh out loud.

I heard I would cry and fall in love with the characters.

I lasted a few pages. I think. I couldn't concentrate. I thought it was silly. It was a DNF for me. I am probably the only one who felt this way.

Southern Lady Reads (Crazy Busy-Will Catch Up!) You're the first person I've seen that didn't love this. Interested to see your thoughts!

Karen I tried so hard to like it. I would put it aside and try to read again, and then re-start and think that maybe it was just a mood I was in. But, I just thought it was overplayed - trying too hard to be cute or funny or whatever. It was just better that I not write anything. Thanks for asking for my thoughts. I hate when this happens. :(

Jayme I loved the Audible! Reading it may have been a different experience! Hope you love your next! ❤

Marialyce Another disappointing story! I know how hard you tried, Karen, but it had no appeal.

Thank you Marialyce. I trust your reviews, so I am grateful that I am not the only one! :)

I know that there are so few that I listen to books - maybe I should re-think this. Thank you Jayme! :)

Rose Rosetree If it's any consolation, I found the title hilarious and appealing. Plus, I'm over 60, which might help me like it. In any case I'm game, and so I flagged this as a book I'd like to read. Maybe you've done me a good deed, Karen, even though that novel was a disappointment for you.

SVETLANA Thanks for the review, Karen. I also was looking to read this book, but now you saved me from a waste of time. It is good to know your opinion as always.

Jsiva Oh sorry 😅 I didn't read this one. The synopsis didn't speak to me...I meant in general...if I can't even get through the book, do you even shine the slightest for me?

No wonder I couldn't find your review! ;) Good philosphy, BTW!

Rachel Hanes I’ve seen so many raving reviews for this book, and yet I’ve held off on reading it. I’m starting to think there is a clear reason why… Thank you for your honest and fair review, Karen!

Karen,

Recently I have come across this book numerous times. I felt compelled to move some things over. So this review has caused me to just go on my merry way and read what I have planned or find compelling after reading a review. Thank you for an frank review.

Thank you so much Cheryl for reading my reviews and sharing how you approach books. I really wanted to like this because there were so many reviews sharing what a great book this was - but, I could not find what they said was there. So, I had to say out loud what I felt. So thank you for this... I appreciate you. :)

Sting Thank you for the honest review, Karen!
I currently have the audiobook on hold with the library. I will reset my expectations before I give it a listen. I hope your next read is a far better experience.

Thank you Carol. That is okay. Not all books are going to please us. There are so many on the pile to attend to anyway! ;)

MarilynW At the beginning I wasn't sure about this book, it started a little too slowly for me and I'm someone who doesn't mind slow burns. But then the various younger folks showed up and I was hooked. Sorry it didn't work for you but good job knowing when to pack it in!

Dusk Tea, fun, and a dead body seem like my cocktail of a wonderful book too, but I have a very similar opinion to yours. I only finished the first three chapters and couldn’t drag myself any further.

I am glad I am not alone in my feelings about this one Dusk! On to the next good book! 📕

Sai Meghana Yes, definitely silly, kiddish. Maybe a good story (I’m only 12 chapters though) but the writing is getting a bit annoying

Katie Lenky I pushed through! Ugh! I mostly just loved Vera. But could have chopped the book in half. Too long. Took forever to get on with it. I was completely surprised at the ending so at least I have that! Ha!

Mélissa maybe it's because of the expectations you had, i went without any and it was really enjoyable!!

message 43: by Charlene (new) - added it

Charlene You may not be alone. I'm on chapter 12 and I'm debating to DNF or push through. I've been wanting to read this book for so long cuz the title is so catchy and the blurb is interesting.
But Vera is driving me nuts!!!
I have a 60-something Asian mom, too, but she isn't like this.
Maybe it's my mood, too.
