this was fun and nice and i wish i read it when i was a child. because then i would have felt the full whimsy of it in real time, and then also have access to a lifelong store of nostalgia every time i read it again forevermore.
but instead, this is a children's book i read as an adult, so it feels like the ceiling of my feelings for it are "fun and nice."
but it was definitely that!
bottom line: am i having an existential crisis?

two people told me this is similar to alice's adventures in wonderland, and that was enough for an immediate placement on my to-read list

This is one of my all-time forever favorite books. It's wonderful to read aloud to a bunch of enraptured students. Orphan's Tales, Six Gun Snow White, and Deathless are good to pick up if you enjoy this and want to read more of her stuff across genres and intended audiences.

I actually haven't finished this yet but please read this. It's got slightly different vibes from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but it's still so good!

yay!!!

I can’t recommend this book enough. This js the first in the series and the best, by far. My only regret is that angsty 12 year old me can’t read this!
I ended up liking it a good deal, Valente's a master of making prickly, but likeable heroines (my favorite kind) and writes simply beautiful prose. The beginning ventures into almost tooth rotting twee territory for me before veering back into a very well crafted story. Hope you like it!
I know I wrote here already (I actually forgot I did) bit I thought I'd elaborate a little more on the difference. It's mainly the writing: Alice has the lovely simple classic children's books style with old-fashioned writing, while TGWCFIASOHOM has far more self-righteous, borderline pretentious writing that may not be everyone's cup of tea (it's absolutely mine, though). It's got more of a tone of grown ups making fun of children and children's books things, yet somehow still very appealing to kids (the intended audience). It's a bit hard to explain.
Anyway, hope you like it!

This book made me laugh and cry and literally actually gasp out loud. I adored it so much and it's a perfect read for autumn.
I haven't read Alice in Wonderland, so I can't compare there but I loved this series. It gave me major Phantom Tollbooth vibes. :)

love phantom tollbooth!
love phantom tollbooth!
Yes exactly- I loved reading this because I got to read it aloud to a room full of 10-11 year olds who were completely and utterly enchanted by it. Her stuff for adults (Orphan's Tales especially) are darker and more violent, etc. Good stuff.
