really liked it
bookshelves: 2018, kindle, own, horror, suspense, classic

Today is the first full day of my Beach vacation. Here is my view:

Today I finished reading Jaws and this is all I see:

So . . . Maybe not the best timing!

Jaws is an easy and cheesy read. I have seen the movie before and figured it would mainly be suspense. But, there is a whole lot of melodrama and naughty romance, too. Also, it is very dated and you can just feel the 70s oozing out of the dialogue.

In some cases, the things I mentioned in my previous paragraph might be considered bad. But, in this case I think they add to the charm, entertainment, and sometimes silliness of the book. Combined, it is just a fun and easy getaway. Like going to a Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum: your are appalled, you are terrorized, you are scandalized, and all you want is more!

Read it for a fun getaway - if you want deep meaning, you will want to look elsewhere.

Matthew,
You were far more charitable than I, but thanks for including a gif of my man, Roy Scheider!

😁 Sometimes the cheese entertains enough that I am forgiving in my final review.

Carol I thought I was the only one who liked to read Jaws at the beach.

Dave don't forget what Benchley did for sharks m put

Riley Ashby lol what i love about that second picture you have is that those are definitely dolphins. which, i mean, still might kill you, but overall much less scary than sharks :-P

Oh, really!? I just looked up Great White Shark and that was one of the ones that came up. Hmmm - I may need to find another picture!

Chad Yep definitely dolphins. They're more likely to sexually assault you than eat you.

Matthew Chad wrote: "Yep definitely dolphins. They're more likely to sexually assault you than eat you."

Hmmm - that actually sounds quite a bit more terrifying!

Ha! That's a great story!

As serious and scary it could be at times, you could tell he was going for pure entertainment - logic a reason be damned!

Chad I've actually been listening to a podcast about the making of Jaws, Inside Jaws.

Matthew Chad wrote: "I've actually been listening to a podcast about the making of Jaws, Inside Jaws."

That could be interesting - and a clever name!

Carol I've been thinking of a re-watch on the movie but maybe reading it again would be better.

Enjoy your vacation and no more shark books until you're home.

Enjoy either or both depending on what you decide.

Thanks! I have been spending my time at the pool!😉

I was referring to your first day of vacation- Katherine is a well known 14 ft white shark, who travels up and down the east coast as well as the Bahamas.

OH! Well . . . I guess I am glad I did not know about that! 😅

Actually - when I wrote this a couple of years ago there was a bad red tide, so we didn't really get in the water anyway 😢

We are planning another beach trip for October . . . so I will keep my eyes out 😨😨😨

Guess we will be avoiding COVID on the shore and sharks in the water!

We didn't end up seeing any sharks . . . but lots of dolphins!

message 32: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori Krause Nice! Just so you know if there are dolphins🐬 around there won’t be any sharks so when you don’t see dolphins then you need to worry! 🦈

Matthew Lori wrote: "Nice! Just so you know if there are dolphins🐬 around there won’t be any sharks so when you don’t see dolphins then you need to worry! 🦈"

That is good advice! They didn't seem to have as may warning processes as I have seen on the Florida Gulf Coast . . . so, I wonder if we would have been warned if their were sharks in the water!?

message 34: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori Krause Even if the the lifeguards knew there were sharks in the water they won’t tell you because shark attacks are very rare and they wouldn’t want to cause panic at the beach. Just don’t wear bright colors or wear jewelry that will reflect because it attracts sharks. If you see one don’t panic stay still most likely it will swim right by you. If you splash around in a panic you’ll just attract it more.

Ricky McConnell I agree, good review !

Then my kids are in big trouble because "splashing in a panic" is their default state - usually just for show!

Matthew Ricky wrote: "I agree, good review !"

Thanks, Ricky! 😃

Lori Krause Well then I don’t know what to tell you about your kids splashing around frantically except that shark attacks are rare. So there’s that!! 😬

Matthew Lori wrote: "Well then I don’t know what to tell you about your kids splashing around frantically except that shark attacks are rare. So there’s that!! 😬"

Ha! I appreciate the discussion . . . I am actually not too paranoid about the sharks. I actually have this thing where I don't like water I cannot see the bottom of or large voids under water. I hear it is called thalassophobia and these following pictures freak me out more than sharks:

Lori Krause The further south you go along the East Coast the clearer the water is 💦 In Miami you can stand in neck deep water 💦 and see your toes!

Matthew Lori wrote: "I think I did something wrong I didn’t mean to do that many lol’s!!!"

There can never be too many LOLs!

Lori wrote: "The further south you go along the East Coast the clearer the water is 💦 In Miami you can stand in neck deep water 💦 and see your toes!"

Maybe someday when this pandemic stuff is all over! I went to Disney's Castaway Cay last October and Playa Bayahibe in Dominican Republic on my honeymoon back in 2004 - water was soooooo clear!

message 46: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori Krause Yes, perhaps one day World will be normal again and you can seek out new watering holes that are crystal clear! Or if you want to step out of your comfort zone you can find a dark 💦 water hole, take a deep breath, and dive into it.

Oh, great! Now you have me freaking out again! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

message 49: by Steven (new)

Steven Ironically, Benchley regretted writing this book because of the impact it had on peoples' perceptions of sharks at large.
