A little girl is one too many mouths to feed in a family with one more child on the way. Her parents decide to have her live with a couple who has lost a child. Our young narrator only knows she is in a strange place without any of her own things. Even the clothes on her back once belonged to that child who is no more. Having all that attention and plenty to eat does her good. How long will she be allowed to stay with the Kinsellas? What will her home feel like when she returns? This short, but significant read is my favorite from Claire Keegan. A little book you could read over and over....more

This is Anne's promise to Marilla before leaving for Queen's College. We have reached the end of the Anne Chapter Books and I have enjoyed each one immensely. For me it was a chance to relive Anne's story while immersed in Abigail Halpin's colorful, captivating illustrations. There are six chapter books to love and I hope many young readers will hone their craft on this series in preparation for the L.M. Montgomery classics.

Swimming is who I am. It's WHAT I am. I am sun-bleached hair, goggle-creased cheeks, cracked lips, freckled shoulders, prune-y fingertips. I AM the water.

Without it, I am nothing. Without it, I am a girl missing her mom, who couldn't care less about her water-daughter.
Tully Burch used to train and race across the water with her mom. When her mom left they had been planning a swim across Lake Tahoe. On this July day, Tully has her best friend Arch in a kayak to support her attempt to swim across the lake. The Godfather Swim.
Jamie Sumner has written Tully's story in verse, from her POV. Each hour she is in the water the opposite shore grows closer. Twelve miles. Six hours. That is the plan. What will happen when her dad finds out about her plan? What about the weather? What about the doubts that creep in with her mother gone?
A few pages have specially shaped poems: a bell, a lightning bolt, and waves. The rest of the pages flow past smoothly and I could feel Tully's determination as well as her uncertainty. Arch is the best kind of friend. Even Sumner's Acknowledgments are in verse. There is still time to read this with Summer in the present tense. Highly recommended....more
Talk about a ray of sunshine! Betty Blob may be a monster, but she can't seem to get the knack of looking like one or sounding like one. On school picTalk about a ray of sunshine! Betty Blob may be a monster, but she can't seem to get the knack of looking like one or sounding like one. On school picture day she encounters a little pink puff and follows pinkie into the forest to "a place as bright on the outside as she felt on the inside." A rainbow of puffs dress her up in a flower style that definitely make Betty stand out from her sepia-tone peers. While her classmates scowl at the camera saying things like "Bees," "Fleas," and "Scabby Knees;" Betty proudly flashed her brightest smile with loud proclamations of "Cheese!" from Betty and the puffs who rode along on her dress. What will her mother say when she sees the picture? You will have to read this one for yourself to find out. ...more
