A group of friends and their families get together for a glamping weekend and a mystery ensues. Only we aren't sure what exactly the mystery is for most of the book. Who's missing? Who's injured? Who is dead? The author lays down an enjoyable narrative of breadcrumbs that kept me coming back for more. The end was maybe a bit too neat...too optimistic for me but other than that it was entertaining. ...more

It dragged on way too much in the first half, and the first big twist (the identity of the killer) was so predictable. However, I did enjoy the back half of the book more... I'm a fan of locked room mysteries and Nalini Singh, but the plot of There Should Have Been Eight was somehow both too fast and too slow. The characters were one-dimensional. I didn't care or connect with them because they simply weren't fleshed out enough. In the time we could have learned more about each we were instead treated to a completely pointless subplot that happened years before, which dragged the book way down. And the end... it was ok, I guess.... but not surprising in the least. It was overall just a bit of a let down....more

Dark CorneMegan Goldin's sequel to Night Swim transports true crime podcaster Rachel Krall into the world of serial killers and internet influencers. Dark Corners is an entertaining thriller but I doubt I'll remember it a year from now. The story has good flow with twists and turns and big personality characters. There was decidedly less rape in this one than Night Swim which is always a positive. My favorite part was the intermitted parts of the podcast. I'll definitely read the next in the series....more

Just like A Flicker in the Dark, the plot of Only if You're Lucky is overly contrived and unnatural.
I can believe wild schemes and scams in fiction (that's why I read it) but the when the entire plot hinges on the main character's inability to understand the obvious things taking place around her I feel violent.
I won't give away any plot points, but it is apparent to the reader and would be to any woman but our main character is clueless...of course, because her actions would differ if she wasn't a forced caricature of a human and the story would be wrapped up quickly. So we, the readers, are left waiting for her to catch up to us....which is the opposite of how any good mystery/thriller should be. ...more
