It's all been said, and much more eloquently than I.
My tbr has exploded and I've found many many books that I would not ordinarily have read if not for all of you sharing your wonderful reviews. So thank you! I've made many bookish friends via Goodreads and my life is the better for it.
I have more 4 & 5 star books than 2 star and my goals for next year include DNF'ing the ones I know aren't working instead of pushing though a book I'm not enjoying. I also plan to request fewer books from NG and EW so I have time to read backlist titles that I've been meaning to get to.
I have trouble choosing a general favorites list, so I will break it down by genre. This exercise of looking back at 2018 confirms that: 1. I love a strong character-based story and/or a book that is thoughtful and makes me think and feel deeply. 2. Psychological suspense is still a troublesome genre for me and most of them have been disappointments. 3. Unless it's magical realism, for me, believability is essential. 4. Historical fiction didn't make it onto my list this year. I think much of it takes too many liberties with the truth and/or authors tend to add a silly romance as a backstory. 5. I love a good non-fiction audiobook
2018 was crazy wild year. It was a busy, challenging year in many ways for our family. Most were good things, but stressful just the same. Even though I had less time to sit and read, the fact that I could still read so many books is due to the many excellent audiobooks I listened to via Audible, Overdrive, and Hoopla. And to (for the most part) staying off Facebook (lol).
Here's my list. Unfortunately the links aren't working so I've only been able to list the title:
Best fiction A Place For Us Salvage the Bones Circe Tin Man A Ladder to the Sky Waiting for Eden Clock Dance The Line That Held Us The Dreamers The Things They Carried A Constellation of Vital Phenomena
Honorable mention The Great Alone (even though the ending was too pat, I loved getting there) The Perfect Nanny (based on a true story this was disturbing and made me think) How to Stop Time Alternate Side The Wildlands Foe: A Novel Every Note Played Rust & Stardust
Best mystery (some of these will be published in 2019) Sunburn The Death of Mrs. Westaway The Wife The Word Is Murder An Anonymous Girl The Night Before
Best non-fiction: I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America
Best Memoir: Tell Me More: Stories about the 12 Hardest Things I'm Learning to Say The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After Forty Autumns: A Family's Story of Courage and Survival on Both Sides of the Berlin Wall Calypso (funny and poignant)
Best “lighter” books that still have heft and gave me something to think about: How to Walk Away The Book of Essie
Best new-to-me genre/author this year (magical realism): Himself Mr. Flood's Last Resort
Best Romance for a Non-Romance Reader One Day in December
Books That Disappointed, the three books that many loved but I did not: Where the Crawdads Sing Educated An American Marriage
Books I wish I had not read: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things Baby Teeth
And here's to 2019 and a stellar reading year for myself and all of you!...more
