UPDATE: The Audible narrated by Delanie Nicole Gill is FANTASTIC
I don’t often read HORROR, and I didn’t even read BIRD BOX, but every once in a while, a book from this genre appeals to me-and this was one of them.
It was told ENTIRELY from the UNIQUE first person perspective of eight-year-old Bela, a girl who is being targeted by a ENTITY who calls itself her “OTHER MOMMY”.
YOU CAN RUN-BUT YOU CANNOT HIDE
“Other Mommy” is looking for carnation (reincarnation) as she wants to LIVE again…
“CAN I GO INSIDE YOUR HEART?”
She pretends to be friends with the vulnerable Bela, as she tries to manipulate her way in.
AND SHE IS GROWING IMPATIENT
I felt the DESPERATION of Daddo, Mommy and Grandma Ruth, as they try to save Bela.
And, I felt TERRIFIED for Bela.
Like the movie, “A Quiet Place” by John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski (which I loved) the EVIL is lurking just out of view, but you can always FEEL its presence.
This story is accurately described as “a chilling horror novel about a haunting” and I think it would also translate well to the BIG SCREEN.
I finished this last night and I woke up, STILL THINKING about the ending!!

The book opens with an epigraph: “I have noticed that even people who claim everything is predestined and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road” Stephen Hawking
After a short delay, and a quick snack service-a series of call buttons will summon the flight attendants on the short Sydney-Hobart flight.
Apparently, an unremarkable woman who nobody noticed upon boarding, has stood up, and while in an almost trance-like state, has started to make her way through the cabin, predicting the “cause of death” and “age of death” for all of the passengers on board.
“FATE WON’T BE FOUGHT!”
The plane will land safely, but everyone on board will be forever changed-especially the six passengers whose predicted deaths loom in the VERY near future.
A few months later, one passenger dies exactly as the woman had predicted, and when that death is followed by another, the passengers who were on board that flight, begin to worry.-What if she is right?
The book opens with witty musings about human behavior in airports, and on airplanes, (all spot on!) as we get to know our passengers before boarding and on the flight, written in the third person POV, with alternating chapters from the first person POV of our “death lady”, Cherry.
I was initially engaged but by 25%, it started to seem more like rambling as we learned about how each of the passengers felt after the flight.
With 400 pages to go-I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue!
Which passengers would brush off the predictions as nonsense, and which passengers would try to thwart fate??
Finally, at around the 50%, mark-when the first prediction comes true, I became more invested again, as I had now grown fond of a few of the characters: particularly Allegra and her mom, Leo and Neve, and Sue and Max.
I continued reading, worried about their fate.
BUT-I found myself wanting to skim through Cherry’s chapters.
I didn’t feel like we needed to hear from her AS often as we did, nor did we need to hear AS much of her back story. Cutting SOME of these chapters would have trimmed enough of the 512 pages to offer us a quicker pace.
How much reviewers are enjoying this seems to correlate with how much Cherry’s chapters resonate. I preferred the chapters which focused on those who RECEIVED her predictions.
We learned of some surprising connections by the end of the book, and there were some satisfying and heartwarming conclusions for a few of the character ARCs, leaving me conflicted on how to rate this book.
While I LOVED how the story ultimately came together by the denouement, I cannot ignore the fact that at one point I questioned continuing on and that I felt compelled to skim read Cherry’s chapters, so 3.5 ⭐️ feels about right.
A buddy read! Was it a 5 star read for DeAnn? Be sure to watch for her review!

Fast forward about 25 years from now, when any two people in the USA can make a baby because of a technological breakthrough called IVG-in vitro gametogenesis.
Any biological matter from a person can be used to create life-saliva, an eyelash or hair follicle or matter from a discarded tissue-but usually a cheek cell swab is combined with either sperm or an egg-the embryo grown in a test tube, and then analyzed for future traits and health concerns. On “Conception Day” prospective parents get to choose which one to implant.
Very few parents choose to conceive a baby the old fashioned way-these “unforeseen children” are such a gamble-no predicting how he or she will turn out.
BUT WITH ADVANCES, COME NEW THREATS…
Celebrities like famous singer, Trace Thorne are targeted by “The Vault”-a black market site devoted to stealing DNA from “desirable” parents and selling it to the highest bidder-which often is the celebrity himself.
Buy it back or risk meeting a biological child you never conceived.
So when a new service becomes available, Thorne hires bio-security guard Ember Ryan to protect his DNA. She knows all of “The Vaults” tricks, so when they are confronted by a pregnant woman, Quinn, who claims that Thorne is the father of her baby, Ember thinks it’s impossible.
But, is it?
Lily, is an “unforeseen” child and budding journalist who wants to expose the bias of “selection clinics” and make a name for herself by doing so.
The narratives of Ember, Quinn and Lily alternate in “round robin” style until the SURPRISING conclusion!
It took a few chapters from each to set up the story, but I REALLY enjoyed how it all came together in the end!
A buddy read with DeAnn-be sure to watch for her review for additional insight!

“If You See Her, You”ll Be The Next One Dead On The Side of the Road”
July 1995:
Eddie and April are newlyweds heading to a cabin for their honeymoon-part of a hotel on the shore of Lake Michigan. They had scrimped and saved and had been able to book five nights, planning to swim, BBQ burgers, drink beer, play scrabble and go to bed. Repeat five times and then head home to Ann Arbor where they would go to work all day, come home at five, have a sandwich together, go to bed, and repeat again, forever and ever, secure in their marital bliss.
But, something along the way, made Eddie take a wrong turn onto Atticus Line, a dark, deserted strip of road that has taken the lives of several hitchhikers over the past nineteen years, the first occurring in 1976.
Then, in the beam of their headlights, they saw a figure walking that appeared to need help, and stopping will change EVERYTHING.
Rhonda Jean isn’t drunk- she is bleeding-and although they rush her to the hospital in ColdLake Falls, when she dies, they somehow become “suspects” instead of the Good Samaritans they are!
Caught up in the mystery, of the original Jane Doe found, dubbed “The Lost Girl”, -they try to clear their names, but when they see her, they have to wonder if she IS just an urban legend ?!
WILL ONE (OR BOTH) BECOME HER NEXT VICTIM?
Fortunately, they will have the help of Rose, the proprietor of the B &B they are placed in by local Police, and Beatrice and Gracie Snell, two resourceful teenaged sisters who are better sleuths than the detectives in charge.
Full of fun 90’s nostalgia, and several eerie, ominous car rides-you will want to scream at Eddie and April whenever they venture back onto Atticus Line.

It isn’t often that I am shocked, but THIS book managed to blindside me!
Tamsyn and Ed weren’t the most affluent couple in Cornwall. So when a tragic accident leaves their daughter, Scarlett comatose, their insurance only gives her 8 weeks to recover, or the machines get turned off.
Even though Scarlett had been moody and rebellious this last year, they still love her dearly, so when they are offered a spot in a medical trial taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, they jump at the chance.
In exchange for the latest treatments for Scarlett, they just have to welcome a reanimated (cloned) version of their daughter into their lives. “Sophie” as she is called, is all of the BEST things about their daughter, and NONE of the worst.
NEW AND IMPROVED
They will live as a family in a gorgeous, furnished apartment and they will want for nothing, while VitaNova, the company running the trial, observes.
If Scarlett recovers, they can continue life with both daughters or VitaNova will welcome Sophie back at the hospital, where she was created.
Ed and Tamsyn finally have the daughter they always wanted in Sophie-even if she isn’t real-and their relationship with each other is better because of her.
AND THEN SCARLETT WAKES UP…
What will Ed and Tamsyn decide to do?
Well, this thought provoking Sci-Fi, futuristic novel was a lot of fun to read! The 400 pages flew by!! I am not sure how I feel about the ending, but it was easy to imagine this occurring in the not so distant future….

What would make Louise and Mark Joyner’s parents leave their house in such a hurry, the night they lost their lives in a car accident on rain slicked roads?
The TV was still on, her Mom’s purse on the counter, her Dad’s cane on the floor and a half eaten Turkey sandwich in the fridge.
Oh, and the Attic had been nailed shut.
This is what Louise and Mark find when they show up to clear out their parent’s home in preparation for sale.
That and their Mom’s CREEPY DOLL collection sitting in the living room, watching the TV.

How’s that for an opening line?
If only, it was what Violet first thought it was….
Rising rock star Violet has just woken up in a locked cabin, in the middle of nowhere, with a mysterious note and a burner phone programmed to only dial one number.
That number belongs to a Construction worker named Bud, born in Texas with a sweet Southern accent, but now residing in the Bay Area.
The note says that they have one week to figure out the connection between them, or someone or something out there, could take their lives.
This story takes place in the same near dystopian Universe as the first book in the Jolvix episodes-Amen Maxine! and unfolds from the alternating first person POV’s of Violet and Bud.
Although Rowena and her friend, Maxine do NOT make a cameo appearance, the robo vacs are still zooming around, and Roboburger-the first set of chain restaurants staffed by robots-is making a killing serving up burgers and fries....more

Seven years ago, everyone in the world was blinded in a matter of months.
Seventy Five days from 20/15 vision to ZERO.
Was it extreme macular degeneration? A weird virus spreading from continent to continent? A Bioweapon created by the Chinese or Russians? Something in the water? Toxic gases released because of Global Warming? Or the Government taking control of an “out of control” population?
Surgeons couldn’t operate, Pilots couldn’t fly planes.
Feeling helpless, many became addicted to Opsin, a hallucinogenic drug.
Technology helped people adjust to the new normal, creating devices which approximate vision, called Vidders- which use a one inch metal disc implanted on a person’s right temple, to download and interpret visual data and then send it directly to a person’s brain-compensating for the permanent blindness, and allowing them to see once again.
But what happens when someone finds a way to manipulate an Vidder and change what people are seeing?
OR NOT SEEING?
Law enforcement agents Mark Owens and his partner Jimmy Peterson must decide if they trust what they are SEEING, and believe what they are HEARING out on the streets.
Owens will also have to figure out if he is ready to move on from his wife, Jeanie, lost to the “Blinding” and if he should trust his new girlfriend, Amira, also in law enforcement, with what he has found out.
A unique Police Procedural which will have you wondering if even when you lose your sense of sight-you can still trust your gut instincts…
This wasn’t quite my usual read, but, I ended up enjoying it! If you enjoy DYSTOPIAN, SCI-FI, POLICE PROCEDURALS, and GOOD GUY vs. BAD GUY adrenaline thrillers-this one is for you!

That was Charlie Phoenix’s excuse when he is finally captured by Police after a HIGH OCTANE car chase on the Los Angeles freeways in the opening chapter…
He just wishes someone would believe him.
“I tried” he says with regret, to the almost lifeless body in his passenger seat, as he hold up his hands in defeat and exits the vehicle.
Charlie is now on Death row-but how did he get there?
We have to circle back to the beginning when his wife Mara leaves him-and he purchases the ‘69 Corvette Stingray to help ease his pain…and discovers that his dream car has the ability to do much much more than that!
It automatically REPLENISHES its own fuel when the gas tank drops to EMPTY. It seems to REPAIR the ailing bodies that take a ride in it. AND, it appears to RESTORE the relationships of the passengers who choose to converse inside of it.
But, is that what is really happening?
IF it has the POWER to do so much right-how does it all end up going so wrong??
Charlie may be in the driver’s seat-but he definitely isn’t in charge.
I loved the author’s last book Doppelgänger, so when he invited me to read this one-it was an easy YES!
He writes very relatable characters and realistic relationships so it isn’t hard at all to buy into our protagonist buying a “Christine” like car (Stephen King).
Originally written as an 8 page short story, this premise has been expanded into a very entertaining, slightly Supernatural full length novel.
If the author isn’t on your radar yet, he should be!

As you begin to learn about the tranquil, gated community of Arcadia Gardens (of Eden?), you will wonder about Sophia. She wakes up each morning pleased with the fact that she was made for her husband-and perfect for him. She was born without dissatisfaction. She tells herself that she is well fed, well housed, busy and loved. ❤️ Could she be AI?
She believes all of this UNTIL she finds a locked drawer which contains something that will make her question everything. Drawers are locked for a reason.
The MANY, very STRICT rules of Arcadia Gardens are divulged throughout the narrative.
Rules designed to keep everyone happy and safe from…..temptation?
And, with the taste of apples on her lips, innocence will be lost and her neighbors will ask her:
Are you happy? DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
The answer to that, may determine her fate.

She was being raised in an experimental commune called “The Homestead” with her creator, Dr. Joseph Bellanger, and the other mothers and daughters, until a suspicious fire takes two lives, and those remaining scatter across the USA, choosing to distance themselves from the experiment and each other.
In 1994, Josephine (Girl One) is studying in Chicago with the hope of following in her “father’s” footsteps, until she learns of her mother Margaret’s disappearance on the news. She returns to her mother’s home and finds that again there has been a fire, and her mother’s car and purse are there even though she is not.
The only clue to her whereabouts-a phone # for a reporter from the Kansas City Telegraph-named Thomas Abbott. With little else to go on-the pair team up to try and trace her mother’s last footsteps, taking them on a cross country road trip which leads to the other mother /daughter duos, most of who would have preferred to stay hidden.
Each daughter new will question if they are indeed, just ordinary or extraordinary.
Every so often I am intrigued by a plot which changes or challenges the status quo of society so this caught my attention.
I was surprised to discover that it was not Dystopian but rather, set in the past where Josie will learn that some in society will observe this experiment, others will want to document what happened, but most will FEAR the ramifications of a World which would no longer need men to conceive babies or be fathers in the traditional sense.
But despite my interest, I found the pace slow-bogged down by long chapters and most of the revelations being shared through conversations rather than any action especially in the first half!
The pace picked up some in the second half, but I never found myself fully invested in this one-I had not connected with the characters enough to care about the outcome.
Still, books resonate differently with each of us, and I encourage you to read several reviews to see if this might be a better fit for you. This was another buddy read with DeAnn, so be sure to watch for her perspective in her (always wonderful) review !

I have enjoyed many books this past year, but this is probably the ONLY one, that I will remember for yeaTHIS is a story not soon forgotten.
Exquisite.
I have enjoyed many books this past year, but this is probably the ONLY one, that I will remember for years to come. THE book that I would vote BEST of 2020.
I finished with tears streaming down my face, and when asked to describe WHY, hours after I set the book aside, I couldn't finish explaining to the friend asking, because my sense of melancholy was still so strong, that I got choked up again, while sharing the story...
The funny thing is that because it's genre is fantasy-I wasn't sure that I would even like it, let alone LOVE it, as MY IDEA of fantasy was limited to magical beasts, legends and folklore.
THIS IS HOW IT BEGINS...
Born in 1691, in Villon-sur-Sarthe, France is a girl called Adeline who loves to draw in charcoal. A girl with seven freckles across her nose like a constellation of stars...
“NEVER PRAY TO THE GODS WHO ANSWER AFTER DARK”
Desperate to avoid an ordinary life, one in which she will belong to someone other than herself, she makes a deal with the devil..
She will live forever, but the price to be paid is that nobody will remember meeting her.
"MOMENTS UNWRITTEN, MEMORIES ERASED" within minutes...for 300 years.
The thing that kept her going in this lonely, heart-breaking life, was books..stories...
Then, in March of 2014, Addie, will discover an almost hidden used bookstore. Set off from the curb, and down some steps, sits "The Last Word".
It's only employee, a young man named Henry.
A man who the next day, when Addie returns will say...
"I REMEMBER YOU"
But how can that be?
THIS IS HOW IT BEGINS HOW WILL IT END?
An EPIC story spanning the globe over the course of Adeline's 300 years..with a DEDICATION in the end, which moved me to tears.
Six stunning stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am so glad to have read this!...more

Colleen Hoover states in her author biography that she does not like to be boxed into one genre.
Although she writes romance, she likes to explore the others too.
When I heard she was writing her first thriller last year, (Verity) I picked up my first CoHo book, and I was riveted to every page! (although I did skim through the x rated sex scenes)
This too, bends genres, but the synopsis doesn’t tell you that.
And, I never tell MORE than the synopsis as I don’t want to SPOIL anything for anyone who likes to go in blind.
BUT, this genre mix is NOT for everyone, so if you are concerned, just read the “tags” on Amazon, so you can decide if this may work for you....or not.
I didn’t love this one, but actually it wasn’t because of the genre mix....
When Leeds meets Layla, he’s convinced that he will spend the rest of his life with her...
Until he meets Willow
WHO is she, WHERE did she come from and WHY is she hanging around?
There are INTERVIEW chapters which have an unknown man in a Jiffy Lube shirt, asking Leeds questions, as he documents the answers on an old fashioned tape recorder. Layla, meanwhile is tied up, in an upstairs bedroom while this occurs.
Alternating chapters, tell the “LOVE STORY” of Leeds and Layla, before and after the INTERVIEW.
WHAT could have happened to lead them to THIS? WHO is the man?
I wanted Leeds to do some “behind the scenes” digging into Willow, as that would have added some substance to this intriguing tale.
But, unfortunately most of the book felt like a YA read to me, because each relationship was so simplistic, based on LUST.
And, that just wasn’t enough to keep me fully engaged.
The end did have a clever twist though, which had me guessing about which woman would come out Victorious...

There was a nursery rhyme recited by the children of Brandenburg, Vermont in the 1900's.
A time when people like Ethel O'Shay, believed in Superstitions, like carrying a sparrow's egg close to your breast when trying to become pregnant.
Or, that the underground springs which fill the pool at the Brandenburg Springs Hotel can not only heal what ails you, but can also grant wishes...
People flocked to the hotel from miles around, to bathe in and drink from the Springs...ignoring the warnings, laughing about the spooky stories which claim that the Springs are cursed.
THE WATER DOES NOT GIVE WITHOUT TAKING.
Sisters- Lexie and Jax, grew up swimming in a pool, on their Grandmother's property in Vermont.
But, it was no ordinary pool.
It was one that was fed by the famous underground Springs from the area. Made from stone and granite, filled with moss and algae, and FREEZING cold.
Their Aunt Rita lost her life in the pool at aged 7, and the girls, spurred on by Lexie, would play "The Dead Game" when in the pool- floating facedown, holding their breath, eyes OPEN, looking for a glimpse of Aunt Rita, who Lexie believes lives on, in depths of the murky water.
"She's coming for you! Coming for us, both!" Lexie would warn her sister. "Don't you hear her at night?"

Now, Jax has returned to the family home, where Lexie had been living. Where Lexie has now mysteriously drowned after calling her estranged sister Jax, nine times. If only, Jax had answered she may have learned what Lexie had discovered.
Now, she will need to piece together the puzzle, on her own, and hope that she can assuage her own guilt at not answering the phone.
This ATMOSPHERIC story is told from the alternating timelines of : 1929: Ethel O'Shay Monroe and 2019: Jackie (Jax).
