I had heard great things about this audiobook. I thought it was an inspirational type thing, coaching the listener into a different, more positive mindset because Tunde Oyeneyin is a physical trainer and spin instructor after all. Speak was so much more than that.

I listened to Speak shortly after my dad passed away, and I received a trigger warning from a friend when I was a good chunk of the way into the book. My friend warned Tunde had lost both her parents. I kept going, hoping for that connection to grief, and I absolutely did.

Tunde first lost her younger brother. I’ve shared here before that my only sibling, my brother, passed away several years ago. Since that time, I’ve found only a few books addressing sibling loss, fiction or nonfiction. Tunde shared many of the same feelings I felt, many I continue to feel. She also very sadly has now lost both parents. While she shares the raw pain and anguish, she also offers tremendous hope and resilience, and that’s where she hooked me most.

Tunde’s story is not just another fitness instructor coaching you with positive catch phrases. Speak is really her personal story and how and why she came to find her own internal voice she shares with us on the bike. Yes, it absolutely made me want to jump on my bike or lift weights with her because, really, those arms are something else. But Tunde’s story motivates me in a personal way both on AND off the bike, where I spend much more time.

Are you ready to be motivated?
Are you ready to be inspired to make a change?
Are you ready for someone to tell you to come as you are?

I have so much love for this bright light named Tunde Oyeneyin. We’ve had a peloton for over a year now and I delight in the energy of the instructors every time I buckle in, but where did this motivation to push others to their best come from?

I’m so glad I decided to give this memoir a try. Her story, encouragement, deep empathy and quest to move forward through grief and loss, give the reader the inspiration to create change for ourselves and even possibly the world.

I cannot recommend this memoir enough. Tunde narrates the audiobook (I binged it in a day) but you’ll want a physical copy to book dart and reference back to.

“When you show yourself as who you are, your people find you. Authenticity is the intersection of trust and truth.”

P.S.
If you’ve made it this far I wanted to share something personal with you. When I was in middle school my friends and schoolmates made fun of my laugh. When I laughed I would let it take over my body and it sounded like I was hyperventilating. After awhile I couldn’t stand being made fun of so I stopped laughing (can you even imagine). I remember not laughing for years until I finally entered college and said screw it! If people didn’t like my laugh then I didn’t need them in my life. I unfortunately had many moments like this in my younger years but I now know how important it is to be authentic self and my people will find me. Tunde reminds us that we can’t control what happens to us but we can control how we react. You’re loved.

This is a book that I will immediately reread and take notes chapter by chapter. This book was so full of nuggets of wisdom and truth. I thoroughly enjoyed this. There is so much I could relate to, especially with how she felt about her arms as I too used to hate my muscular arms when I was younger. Boy would I give anything to have those muscles back. I’m working on it.

Tunde makes me want a Peloton just so I can do her classes!! Tunde goes over her five pillars of SPEAK which is:

Surrender
Power
Empathy
Authenticity
Knowledge

I love memoirs like this that are written with such truth and openness. Her honesty helps others not feels so alone. I will come back with more thoughts after my second read through.

if you ever need a confidence booster or a good quote or two to get you through a bad day, tough time, rough patch… Tunde is YOUR GIRL!

i picked this up on audio on a whim and had no idea who she was (Peloton fans will, though!). i took down notes in my phone as i was listening, rewinding to hear them again. really powerful and inspirational.

what i loved most was how it proved there’s no right path, no right timeline, no such thing as a set career path or need to stay where you are/that you can’t reinvent yourself in your 30s if you’re unhappy. truly such a powerful message!!! there’s such a stigma around that in our society and this book helps you challenge some of those fears and barriers that may be preventing your own happiness.

will reflect on some of these quotes for years to come ❤️

here were some of my favorites:

- “You made it through 100% of your bad days. None of the bad days have won, even when it feels like they have. So if you wait for one day, it may never come. Let go of what you thought “should be” and lean into “what is.”

- When fear gets in your way of feeling like your best self and like yourself, is it because you fear the judgement around you, or your own judgement?

- “Life has a way of repeating a situation with a different twist. And being aware of when it comes around again, is what helps us to grow and evolve.”

- “We don’t chose what happens to us—we choose how we react to it.”

- “Someone else’s decision couldn’t rob me of my
Joy. The choice to find happiness in my work was mine.”

As someone who has a Peloton and takes classes (be it far fewer than I should), I had a vague familiarity with Tunde Oyeneyin and her popularity within the Peloton world. I have even participated in a class or two of hers.

What I did not know, is her incredibly inspiring story of how she went from a young girl growing up in a large close knit Nigerian family, to a cutting edge makeup artist, to the face of Peloton. I loved hearing her stories of the people who’s lives she touched along the way even in the smallest of ways, and how they touched hers in return. It was also fascinating to learn about the in-depth hiring process at Peloton and that she unsuccessful interviewed a few years before coming on board.

Speak is an acronym: Surrender, Power, Empathy, Authenticity, and Knowledge. As she moves through each of these topics, she explains the ways in which she herself utilizes these concepts to move through moments of great success and profound loss.

It was an incredible experience to learn about her early roots including her strong and nurturing parents. From a young age, her mother instilled in her the most important lesson, that she had value and importance. In times of uncertainty, she would often reflect on her mothers blessing of sorts, “may whatever Tunde says be the right thing to say,” as a way to recenter herself.

This book is chalk full of inspirational quotes, messages and life lessons perfect for anyone seeking to become their most authentic self. I look forward to reading/listening again in the future.

Thank you Libro.fm and Avid Reader Press for an ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

5 Stars for Speak: Find Your Voice, Trust Your Gut and Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be (audiobook) by Tunde Oyeneyin read by the author.

I ran across this book when I was looking up another book with the same title. The cover pulled me in and I just had to find out more about this person. Come to find out she is a Peloton instructor. I remember when Peloton first came out but I had no idea that it was such a big deal today. I used to be really into cycling and the author is a huge celebrity in the cycling world today and I’d never heard of her.

This book is equal parts motivational and memoir. And the author comes across as very authentic and she is really motivating. This is a wonderful story and maybe I’ll even get back on the bike again and go for a ride.

a good read that was a little too heavy on the girlboss/motivation/inspirational quotes at times for me and it’s where I found myself not paying attention. I loved the parts about the author’s family, her way to finding herself, changing careers, and navigating relationships.

thank you to Libro.Fm, Tunde Oyeneyin, and Simon & Schuster Audio for a free ALC of this book!

In Speak, Tunde Oyeneyin shares her story and her personal approach to life, adopting the acronym SPEAK (Surrender, Power, Empathy, Authenticity and Knowledge). ⁣

Tunde has a positive, enthusiastic energy, though she’s certainly experienced her share of hardships and pain too. I felt for her and her family when she describes the grief and loss they have endured. Tunde worked in the cosmetic industry for several years before breaking into the fitness space and becoming a Peloton instructor. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook and hearing Tunde’s story directly from her. ⁣

While I am currently a casual but increasing Peloton enthusiast, you do not need to be a Peloton fan to enjoy Tunde’s story or take insight from it. Most of us can benefit from incorporating more SPEAK in our life.

Tunde is such a great Peloton instructor. I enjoyed learning more about her life through her book Speak. Tunde explains the five pillars of SPEAK, the acronym she lives her life by: Surrender, Power, Empathy, Authenticity, and Knowledge. I'd classify the book as a motivational memoir giving insights into the obstacles she's overcome in her life while highlighting how she has stepped into being her most authentic self and her hope that others can to.

I didn't find this to be heavy on the self-help angle, which was perfect for me. That being said there were still plenty of passages that spoke to me, for instance "To build endurance, you have to endure. It's always difficult when you're in it, but once you see the speck of light at the end of the tunnel, all it can do is get bigger."

I look forward to whatever Tunde does next both inside and outside of the Peloton community.

Engaging but ultimately unsatisfying for me. I think I am weary of these types of books and this didn’t stand out enough. The author’s energy comes thru the pages of the book tho and I appreciated that.

Blessedly this is not a challenging read. It is a book I wished had a better editor to tighten up the sections and really draw out the key takeaways per chapter. (However, if the print edition does this better than the e-arc I received through NetGalley, I'll be glad to hear it.) Many times, I felt as if the stories rambled early on and I had to take a break from the book. I didn't mind the lack of a linear narrative, that the writing needed to jump around her life in order to shape whatever was needed for various chapters. Bit by bit, it took me a little over a week to get through this slim volume and, in the end, I am still unable to connect what SPEAK means.

Nevertheless, I have great respect for Tunde's story and style. I'm sure she is a role model and inspiration for many.

This definitely reads more as an auto-biography than a self-help book which I was okay with since I love Tunde as a peloton instructor. Her family’s story was so fascinating and I especially enjoyed hearing the story of how she ended up at Peloton. Otherwise, it’s just an OK book. The structure is weird and the themes of each chapter aren’t well delivered by the end of the chapter. It just felt like a hodgepodge of stories with a weak theme. I think a stronger editor could have gone a long way.

The amount of love and admiration I have for a woman I've never met is truly ASTOUNDING. Plus, she kicks my ass on my Peloton bike on the regular, so that's how you know how much I adore her. I've always found Tunde to be so incredibly beautiful because of the energy she exudes but after reading her story I realize how amazing she really is.

I knew I needed to get my hands on this book after taking her Year of Yes Ride where she talked about resilience and how the grief of losing half of her family made her into the person she is today. As someone who sits in grief regularly (even though mine looks a little different than hers), this spoke to me on such a deep level and this book takes that to an even deeper level. The only reason this was a four star read for me is because I didn't love the way this was edited and how it jumped back and forth between her time pre and post Peloton. Otherwise, I have nothing but so much love for my girl Tunde and now will look forward to taking her classes even more.

If you have taken a Tunde class, this memoir is a MUST!! Incredibly moving and inspirational. Also, it’s only about six hours on audio, so it’s the perfect choice if you need a short fiction break.

Thank you to Libro FM for giving me a free copy of this book! All opinions are my own.

I really liked this! I think if you’re a fan of Tunde, like I am, then you’ll probably enjoy it too. I find her inspiring and I just love her energy. She’s definitely one of my favorite instructors to ride with. This is mostly about her childhood in Texas, her family, and her transition from the beauty industry to the fitness world. It was really fun to learn more about her life. She’s Nigerian as well and she and I have some shared life experiences, so I related to a lot of her story. She narrates the audiobook herself and I thought it was a very enjoyable (and quick!) listen.

Wow! I bought this book to support a Peloton instructor not expecting it to be a 5star read! Wow. It’s written beautifully and the way she shared her story was amazing! I cried and laughed and giggled. I mourned her losses and celebrated her gains. Any book that draws so much emotion gets a 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!!

I am not crazy about non fiction…..but this one…..Easily my most favorite read of the year. More than 5 stars. I do have a peloton and like tundes classes so I do have a bit of a bias. But… omg this book! Inspiring, but also not too annoying, shares about her past (would have loved to know more) and she has these solid beautiful nuggets of wisdom where I saw myself writing them Down or book marking it while I listened on audio. Highly recommend especially if you love Tunde.

I’m a Peloton addict, so of course I had to read this memoir by Peloton instructor Tunde. She’s not one of the instructors I’ve taken the most classes with, but I always enjoy her classes when I do take them - her warm and positive energy just shines right through the screen. And that same positive energy shines right out of the book too!

It’s part memoir, part self-help - discussing everything from her family, friends, relationship, career, and insecurities - along with her advice on how to speak up and live your most authentic life. I’m personally not really a self-help reader, so while I love the affirmations when I’m on the bike, in book form I think I would have preferred this if she had stuck more to the memoir side of things and told those in a more chronological manner - but I will say that the advice she gives, while a little generic, certainly seems like good advice and is offered quite sincerely. Not the best memoir I’ve ever read, but I enjoyed it, and I’m sure most other peloton fans will enjoy it as well. And after finishing it, you better believe I jumped on the bike and did a Tunde ride!

I got hooked on spin class a few months ago when I was looking to start a new hobby and soon after made the plunge and bought a Peloton; I wanted to prove a point and make fun of the Peloton die hards, but quickly I found myself drinking the proverbial Kool-Aid. This book gave me a new appreciate for being fully authentically yourself and with that how exercise has helped her feel more confident and as a result, speak her truth. I was surprised that this book made me as emotional as it did; I related to Tunde when she talked about career shifts and leaning on her found family. This book is perfect for anyone who is looking for their next step or just needs space from what you are "supposed" to do or what is "supposed" to make you happy. I love that she talked about finding your tribe and pursuing what really makes you happy.

*So there’s a reason I had never picked up this book before @kells.bookish.life recommended it for the 12 friends/12 books challenge… and that reason is, I really don’t personally care for “self-help” books. (Absolutely nothing against those who love them, they just come off more cheesy than helpful for me.)

*BUT thankfully, this book was a lot more about Tunde’s personal story. She is a fantastic storyteller (and audiobook narrator!), I enjoyed hearing her journey so far and I can see why she has become the success she is! I did find the “self-help” moments quite cheesy but overall a win!

As an avid Peloton rider, I loved this. Tunde is one of the most encouraging instructors and it's not hard to believe that has flowed over to her book. I loved learning more about her life, her career path, and how she ended up at Peloton. She is so open and vulnerable and talks a lot about creating change for ourselves. It was very inspiring and I could honestly see myself rereading this someday if I ever feel I'm in a rut.

Tunde reads the audiobook herself and I would highly recommend listening to this one if you get the chance.

I absolutely LOVE Tunde. Her Peloton classes are incredible due to her contagious energy. Although I already knew some of her story, I loved every minute of this memoir. Her voice is powerful, admirable, relatable, and insightful. This memoir will resonate with everyone in some way, as she touches on such a range of topics; grief, body confidence, the power we have inside, determination, fitness, grief, self-confidence, and resilience. The audiobook is phenomenal because Tunde reads it- I coud listen to her forever!
