if you’re a fan of the FINLAY 3.5 rounded up to 4 for GR! this was such a fun audio binge. it was laugh-out-loud funny and the ending was surprising.
if you’re a fan of the FINLAY DONOVAN series or Dolly Alderton’s GHOSTS or GOOD MARERIAL, you’ll enjoy this one! similar vibes, very funny, a good blend of litfict, mystery and semi-romance and an overall quick binge.
the audiobook format was perfect because it gave it more comedic value and you got a good vibe for the character’s personality. plus the narrator is British which is always a vibe!
the premise: after a bad breakup, a woman joins a dating app and goes on a bunch of dates. but then everyone she went on dates with happens to turn up dead… and sometimes she was the last to see them alive. is she a secret serial killer? or being set up?
it’s not a WOW OMG read it now book but i had a great time binging it and would reco it for a quick beach binge/audio listen on a car ride!
i thought this one was just okay. mainly because for me, the first and second half felt like two totally different books?!
this author also wrote THE Wi thought this one was just okay. mainly because for me, the first and second half felt like two totally different books?!
this author also wrote THE WISHING GAME which was everrryyywhere last year. i haven’t seen too many people review this yet (just released + is a BOTM pick) and i myself went in pretty blind… but overall, i think readers will prefer her debut.
whats sad is this had so much potential and i was loving the first half. it totally sucked me in—two boys disappear for 6 months and are magically found but one can’t remember anything and one won’t talk about it. now one of them makes a living helping find people who are missing. it was giving MAJORRRRR Adrienne Young and THE SPELLS OF FORGETTING or THE UNMAKING OF JUNE FARROW vibes (loved both of those sooo much) and i so wanted it to continue but it just didn’t ...more

this magical realism book was getting a lot of buzz and being compared to THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE, so naturally i was interested. while i can see some Addie LaRue references, it doesn’t even scratch the surface of that magical book. but if you liked Addie LaRue and you also like traveling and learning about the world, this book might be worth checking out!
i listened to the audiobook and highly recommend that version! it’s narrated by one of my favorites (the same narrator who does Kate Quinn’s books) and she really brought the story to life well.
this premise is so interesting and i applaud the author for his creativity. insane that this is a debut! i’d deff check out his future work.
there were so many strong themes here - humanity, discovery, strength, survival. what would you do if you couldn’t stay in the same place for more than 2-3 days? would it be hell or cool? it really makes you wonder. the author wrote a FMC well, especially a little girl. she was also very funny at times!
i think my main issue was that the travel started too quickly. i wanted a little bit more about the magic puzzle ball and the sickness and how it all got started before we immediately dive into 9 year-old Aubry’s travels and life with loneliness.
because the majority of the book is around Aubry and her travels around the world by herself due to her condition, the pacing and the lack of other POVs from other characters were other bummers for me. some of my fave chapters were when she was with other characters (the Prince, the girl studying her, the guy on the train). i also am still not sure how i feel about the ending even though i’ve been finished with it for a few days! i don’t know how i saw it ending, so i’m not sure how to feel. ...more

i reco the audiobook for this one. i’ve seen quite a handful of friends DNF this book and i can see why (see above re: where is this going). if i read the physical copy, i may have DNF. loved the audiobook version and it deff helped me stay invested—plus British narrators are always a fun time!

i liked it, it hooked me and interested me enough to stick with it and keep going. a rather quick read and i liked the dual narration / POV. my fave part was the ending and the emo-ness of it all.
my major critiques were that i felt like the characters were a bit immature for being in early 30s. plus found it hard to believe they’d take their old teacher on a cross country road trip (yes even though one saw him as a father figure at times in her life) but still. miscommunication tropes are some of my least faves so the miscommunication over time between the two MCs was another meh point working against me.
overall a cute and easy quick read and i do reco it, but it was missing the WOW factor to stick with me for awhile....more

overall it was enjoyable and i really liked the campus setting, but i think it will be a bit forgettable overtime and not stick with me as a favorite read of the year mainly… because it just “ended.” i wanted some more resolution! maybe a chapter “10 months later”?
i was impressed by how many different topics the author wrote about and made you think about subconsciously. there is so much history of a person that makes you who you are and makes you act a certain way, and i really loved how she showed that for every different character. doing this on a college campus was a very creative use of a setting.
i listened to this on audio and really liked that version and the narrator. it was an extremely easy book to listen to while i was walking and running errands and i found myself laughing at so many different parts. i will say the pacing was a bit off too—the beginning has me hooked, the middle had me wondering where this was going to go, then the backhalf ending really ramped up with some drama and action… and then it just ended ...more

i say this every time i read historical fiction, but my favorite thing about historical fiction is how much it teaches and educates me. i feel like i know a lot about World War II, and then i read another book that shows me a totally different side and allows me to learn so much more about this extremely important piece of history ❤️
this book was definitely more on the religious side of some World War II historical fiction books that i’ve read, but i really liked how the author wove in faith throughout a lot of the main characters’ journeys and decision-making process.
another one of my favorite things about historical fiction is how inspiring it is. i’m always so inspired by all of the people willing to risk their lives and work for the resistance and through underground channels in order to help save other people that were total strangers. it seriously makes me emotional every time ...more

if you liked TAKE MY HAND or HOUSE OF EVE, this is for you! historical fiction that does not follow a war (or WW2 lol) and deals a lot with women’s rights, abortion/fertility, etc.
the ending was so good and just made me want to give these girls a hug. it has 3 POVs and follows 3 women who all get intertwined in a shocking way and it was so well done. i learned SO much from this book and really think this should be required reading in school. it’s set in Canada but my goodness all of this applies to the US (even though it’s set in the 60s/70s...more

this is a follow up to THE GUNCLE so i recommend that you listen/read that first or there will be spoilers. it had been 3 years since i read that and was hazy on the details, but the author did a great job reminding you of the details and getting you up to speed. a re-read isn’t necessary :)
my fave parts—the setting, the comedy and the vibes. travelling Europe in the summer? a beautiful Italian resort on Lake Como? YUP.
the author did such a great job narrating and i was truly laughing every 5 minutes. it was SO fun. the content is light but touches on good life lessons and still deals with grief and moving on from events in Book 1.
