I Return
Hello all. It has been a considerable period since I was last here, so hello all. My profile is sadly out of date since, for reasons that elude the best minds of the age, Goodreads has decided to lock me out of editing it. I have no idea why, but I have written to them to get it sorted. In the meantime, a quick update as to what I've been up to.
Firstly, Carter & Lovecraft came out last year to good reviews, which was nice. The TV rights have already gone to Warners so you never know; one day Dan Carter and Emily Lovecraft might be coming to the small screen. The sequel has been written and should be out in about September or October 2017.
Secondly, the fifth Johannes Cabal book -- The Fall of the House of Cabal came out last month, again to very flattering reviews. It's the last Cabal for a little while as I take a little rest from him, but I have little doubt I shall be going back to him at some point. I don't think it's unreasonable to take a rest from him. By my reckoning I've written about 600,000 words about Cabal, and that's about twice what Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about Sherlock Holmes before becoming sick to death of him and slinging him off the Reichenbach Falls. I'm being positively temperate by resting Johannes Cabal in comparison.
Thirdly, I've launched a Patreon page to take some of the uncertainties of cashflow out of life. I shan't speak interminably about it here as the page does all that for me. You can find it at https://www.patreon.com/JonathanLHoward

Awaiting book 3 of Carter and Lovecraft. Also, if they do come to the small screen, endeavor not to lose creative control of it so that it doesn't turn in to a single season of shit like this did: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486657/...

I very much hope to be commissioned for C&L3 at some point. As to creative control of any productions, I would only at most have an advisory role as C&L is not my intellectual property; Macmillan owns it. I love writing those books, but Macmillan decides whether there will be any more.
Interesting. Well, good work sir on the first two and here's to hoping.
Just finished the first Cabal. Outstanding. Highly entertaining and intelligent. Rest in peace Christopher Cazenove, who was delightful. From the sound of it I feel like the replacement will be stellar as well, but it is always sad when you get attached to a voice.Currently working through Carter and Lovecraft, and obviously loving it. I say obviously because I am now a fan, and a big one!
I cannot stress enough how strong a desire I have had to read something involving a private investigator or detective in a story that also has supernatural and Lovecraftian elements. They are exceptionally rare. I know there are a few at least, even a pastiche continuation of the Legrasse story from Lovecraft himself. But this is a unique hankering--there are so few movies, shows or games that even take up this type of task. I love Cthulhian mythos, board games, etc., but the thing that I love even more is having someone who (regardless of not standing a chance of survival) still goes on in opposition to fight this kind of cosmic adversary. A detective or private investigator suits this role perfectly, just as a priest would an exorcism.
I search ravenously for good books to read, from whatever century, and find it so wonderful to come across the occasional author that really stands out to me today. Of all the clones, pastiches, remakes, hacks, fops, it becomes extremely difficult to find quality lately, especially when so many highly-reviewed stories are given free praise for many things that don't necessarily deserve it. I'll leave it at that.
Anyway, this comment is about you, just wanted to say I appreciate the work you do and the stories you tell--we need Weird Tales in this world, greatly. It is the one time I happily set fantasy and historical fiction to the side and just devour the guilty pleasure, so thanks.
The video game "The Sinking City" really fit the bill in this regard as well and I hope one day we will see many more stories like this or that. It wouldn't hurt to have a Cabal or Carter movie, either!
