Historic building. Room was dusty. We checked in on the fourth of July. Staff didn't mention that we could view fireworks from the bar on the 21rst floor. When we did go up to check out the 21rst floor bar called the Starlight. We were told we needed a reservation even tho we are guests at the hotel. They allowed us to stand at the bar.

Hotel is very clean and staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Housekeeping went out of their way to get us extra pillows right for my husband’s bad back. Also the valet was an excellent worker and dealt with all our bags in a professional manner as well as friendly.

Sadly this grand old hotel has been redone with cheap chrome and fake wood accents, walls that were once handsome polished wood are now chipped paint. Even the grand public rooms are stripped and far less charming than they appear in these photos. Standard guest rooms are tiny, with bare wood floors, depressing paint jobs in desperate need of freshening. We paid for an upgrade to get out of the tiny room we were assigned (which they said was an "upgrade" - meaning a higher floor). The larger sized room (an additional $50) was definitely nicer, but whoever they hired for decor chose the cheapest finishes. Bedding was the nicest part. The big attraction here was the rooftop bar which we fondly remembered when it was Harry Denton's Starlite room. Now the decor has been stripped, it is jammed with a younger crowd, loud music, and they could not seat us, even at the bar, even as hotel guests, without a reservation. So if the bar is why you are choosing this hotel, make sure you book a table there in advance. My advice: don't take a standard room unless you don't mind a real "youth hostel" kind of experience - and better yet, go stay at the Hilton Financial District. MUCH nicer rooms for the same price, big windows with great views, easy walk to Chinatown, Ferry Building, North Beach. Come here for the bar if you like, but you don't have to don't stay here.

We were on the 20th floor- I have a six year old. There is a club on the 21st floor that played loud music until 3am. There were plenty of inebriated partiers staying on our floor, screaming and yelling. Also, the water would come out of the faucet and shower head and then taper off slowly, then come back but scalding hot. Comfortable place, excellent service, but some extenuating circumstances.
