Is this the most brutal collision ever seen in netball? Star player in Tracey Neville's team 'absolutely cleaned up' in horror clash

  • Tracey Neville's Melbourne Mavericks beat the Giants
  • Kim Jenner took a big hit in the final moments

One of the most brutal collisions witnessed on a netball court played out on Saturday, with sporting great Bianca Chatfield hitting out at the 'outrageous' decision to continue the game.

Kim Jenner, defender for Tracey Neville's Melbourne Mavericks team, was 'absolutely cleaned up' by Giants opponent Amy Sligar after pulling off a brilliant deflection.

Both players had eyes firmly on the ball and clashed heads with less than a minute remaining in the match at Ken Rosewall Arena, and were left sprawled out on the sideline.

However,  the game was not stopped, leading to outrage from former Diamonds defender Chatfield.

'Kim Jenner gets absolutely cleaned up,' Chatfield said on ABC's Offsiders.

'At this point in the game, the umpires didn't stop, didn't call time. Play went down the other end of the court.

'That to me was outrageous.

'That needs to be stopped.

'We've got a new concussion policy in netball.

'Any head high infringements, straight away the game has to be stopped. It wasn't. It was let go and played out.

'These poor girls had to pick themselves up and figure out where they were by the end of it.'

According to Super Netball rules, 'umpires may hold time without a request being made if there is an obvious or serious injury' – but neither official called for play to be stopped.

Another concussion protocol allows for an independent match day doctor and home team doctor to call time and remove a player from the court in the event of a suspected head knock.

'It did seem a little bit strange that it was just play on – we had two players lying on the ground on the sideline and it was just play on,'  said Giants coach Julia Fitzgerald.

The Mavericks went onto win the game and Jenner was awarded player of the match.

'It's always body on the line in those minutes. That was our finals right there,' she said.

'It was just do what you've got to do.'
