Wout Weghorst's goalscoring cameo for Netherlands against Poland has reportedly put him on the radar of Dutch giants Ajax.

The 31-year-old, who is still contracted to Burnley, came off the bench to score the winner for the Oranje in their Euro 2024 opener. His heroics were reminiscent of his late double against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup finals.

Weghorst spent last season on loan in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, following short spells at Besiktas and Manchester United - where he failed to register a league goal in 17 outings.

According to The Telegraph, his recent display has put him in line for a move to Ajax, one the striker would welcome, with his parent club gearing up for a campaign in the Championship following their relegation from the top-flight.

Weghorst joined Burnely from Wolfsburg in January 2022 and he has one year remaining on his deal at Turf Moor.

Ajax missed out on Champions League football after finishing fifth in a difficult campaign for the club

Ajax are coming off a difficult season on and off the pitch. The record Eredivisie winners ended the campaign in fifth, a whopping 35 points behind winners PSV.

Their dismal league campaign - which included a 6-0 humbling by rivals Feyenoord - saw them miss out on Champions League football for the second successive season.

Ajax's mid-season acquisition of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson did little to improve their fortunes. Their season of chaos continued after the club suspended their new CEO Alex Kroes after 'indications he was engaged in insider trading'.

Kroes was appointed by the Dutch side last summer but was only able to begin his duties in Amsterdam last month due to contract complications with previous club AZ Alkmaar.

The nightmare campaign has seen them sack Maurice Steijn as manager following a disastrous set of results in October that left them in the Eredivisie relegation zone with just five points - their worst run since 1954.

There has been fan fury and protests too with a game against Feyenoord abandoned in September after flares and fireworks were thrown onto the pitch with the side 3-0 down. Just hours later, chief Pier Eringa stepped down after six months in the role.

Ajax were also dumped out of the Dutch Cup by minnows USV Hercules - an amateur side with students in their team - in one of the most incredible results in the country's footballing history.

Weghorst will hope to continue to impress when the Netherlands take on France in a mouthwatering clash on Friday. Both sides can effectively secured passage to the knockout rounds with a draw.
