I think the LED on the "Satellite" Switch staying on when the light is on is strange.
4 out of 5 stars
I think the LED on the "Satellite" Switch staying on when the light is on is strange.
Clean modern look, good quality, app has good features and excellent Alexa integration. Installation is really straightforward with good instructions provided. 3-way with dimmer just follow the wires once you figure out which is going to the light (or w/e device). If the old switch was not a dimmer, the electrician wouldn't care which wire went where because it wouldn't matter.I love this product but I give it 4/5 because the "Satellite" Switch LED ring (the see in the dark light) stays on even when the light is on. This is not true of the main switch that operates normally. In fact, the non-dimmer 3-way Kasa functions as you'd expect, the nightlight turns off. I thought I installed the neutral incorrectly than read the manual and seems this is actually the expected behavior. I just find it a little odd.You do need to make an account with Kasa but the app is nicely featured, clean UI and integration with Alexa was exceptionally easy and there's very little Alexa cannot do via voice commands. Also each switch has it's own WiFi name so you can setup multiple at once. I installed about 25 (total different types 3 way, 3 way dimmer, single pole dimmer, and single pole as well as outlets). Thus far very reliable in terms of connectivity. The package includes the single switch back-plate, but you can see above I have various configurations. I used ENERLITES Screwless Decorator Wall Plates, work great.

This review is for the V2 version of this switch, which I purchased after returning the defective V1 version of this switch (make sure you filter Amazon's aggregated reviews for V1 and V2 to make sure you are seeing the right reviews - shame on you Amazon).

This V2 version of the switch works perfectly - TP-Link made physical design changes to the wiring between V1 and V2 and those change seem to have corrected all the issues that the V1 version had (V1 shares a single terminal for the load and traveler 2 on the satellite switch, and V2 has separate terminals for load and traveler 2 on the satellite switch - a clear indication that the V1 design is defective).

I had no issues getting this V2 version to work - it even fixes an issue with the V1 satellite where the V1 satellite switch had a noticeably brighter LED light in the switch as compared to the rest of the TP-Link "family" of Kasa dimmers and on/off switches - the V2 satellite now has comparable LED brightness in the satellite switch - a bit of an aesthetic nit-pick I know, but I have the V2 satellite in a 4 gang wall box with 3 other TP-Link Kasa dimmers, and the V1 satellite's noticeably brighter LED stood out as compared to the other 3 switches in the 4 gang box - the V2 satellite in this kit addresses that.

So basically this V2 kit fixes all the issues with the V1 kit (notably that the V1 kit DOES NOT WORK). I'm happy with the V2 kit, but honestly the V1 kit should no longer be manufactured or sold.

We replaced almost every light switch in the house with these switches, including a mixture of single throw and three-way Kasa switches. (I always thought three-way was a confusing term!)

The install is pretty easy. Wires are clearly labeled. The only hard part is fitting it in the wall, since the box is a little bigger than a standard switch. But that's to be expected if you are adding remote control convenience!

It's very easy to add the switches to the Kasa app, if you don't make the mistake I did. More than once....
If you select the wrong switch in the add device menu, you have to wait for it to time out trying to connect. Or you keep trying to connect and wonder in frustration what is wrong.

I accidently selected the smart switch instead of the smart dimmer switch, which is much further down the list. I even once selected the single throw smart dimmer instead of the three-way smart dimmer switch. My mistake every time of course. But I replaced all of the light switches in the house, so there were a lot to go through. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I think it would be helpful if Kasa implemented an auto-detect of the model type during the manual add device process - when the switch is in pairing mode (flashing orange and green).

Overall, the switches are great. Love the calibration process and the ability to dim/brighten at the switch, the app, or by linking it with Alexa. And the Alexa integration was super easy. As soon as I finished configuring in Kasa, it showed up in the Alexa device list. Which led me to create groups and scenes!

After the failed launch and all the problems they had, I figured that, after they took it off the market and then returned it, it would be ready to use. It is not. And their tech support folks are now claiming that the product was never pulled from the market, it was just out of stock; despite the fact that the page on their website was removed and the link to amazon taken down. I purchased two of these in February of 2022 and installed them. They are both working differently despite being installed right next to each other in the same manner. One of the satellite switches will turn the lights on but it will not turn them off or dim them. The little circle light does not work on this switch either. On the main switch for that set of lights the little circle works properly. On the other switch, both switches work normally but the little circle light stays on all the time on both units. I updated the firmware on both switches but one of them will not update to the same version as the other one and the Kasa app is reporting that there are not fimware updates!

I was also under the impression that the version 1.0 hardware was replaced with a new version but the switches I received are reported as being hardware version 1.0 in the Kasa app. If you are used to having the same options as you would with the regular dimmer switches from Kasa, be warned. These do not have the programable double tap feature, the programable fade options, and many of the other features of the regular dimmer switches.

I've followed the development of this switch for over a year hoping that it would finally come to fruition. Unfortunately this product is still plagued with the same issues that were were reported a year ago. Do not buy this product. It should be pulled from the market. They need to start over from scratch. I have many other Kasa products and all of them work perfectly. This is not up to the standards I've seen from them and seems to suffer from issues that are not fixable. I spent over 30 minutes on the chat with an agent trying to fix it. They instructed me to download some janky software to update the firmware manually. That software did not work either.

Do not order this product until these issues are worked out.

I built an extension and smart switched everything. First batch of these worked great so I got another (all form Amazon). That 2nd set and two more after that were previously opened and used... And they didn't work. It was bad they sent one set with none of the inside box materials. In the end I got a set from another supplier and it worked well. So I think we have amateurs trying to install these sensitive instruments and damaging them, then sending them back to Amazon. They work Perfect if installed right, but you need to ensure your power is off, and wires are exactly where they should be.

1.0 out of 5 stars This switch doesnt work
Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2022
Let me say that I have successfully installed several TP Link switches in my home and all of them worked out of the box. I have also connected 3 or 4 way switches using smart or dumb switches which worked fine. In this case, I was replacing a smart switch from another brand to reduce the number of apps on my phone.

The wiring diagrams that come in the box are for one specific configuration which is if the line to your circuit breaker is in light switch 1 and the load to the bulb is in light switch 2. TP link couldnt be bothered to fix another terminal to the 2nd switch so you must connect both the load and traveler 2 to the same terminal. No diagram is available if the load and line are in the same switch. A google search showed people asking about this configuration and people offered diagrams in the forums, but these are not from TP Link itself.

Once connected, the switch would not connect to the Kasa app. Nor would the switch reset. The wiring is fine because I can revert back to the dumb switches and it all works. So this is just a TP Link product issue.

I can not recommend this TP Link switch. Amazon basics makes a switch which costs half of this TP Link one and the amazon one actually works.

The switch installs and works just fine. Wifi works great with app. However. I bought this exclusively with the intent to connect to my Alexa device with all my other smart lights but it has been 4 days of attempting to enable the TPLink Kasa skill. I get the same error. "We were unable to link TP-LINK Kasa at this time. Please try again later." Will update if it ever works.

UPDATE: To anyone having issues connecting to Alexa through the Alexa app.
Instead To Link to Alexa open the Kasa app, go to the "me" page, click on "third-party services" to link to Alexa device.
