2015, T R A M A 2 - TREBALLS D'ARQUEOLOGIA DE LA MEDITERRÀNIA ANTIGA
This book contains a compilation of the epigraphy in the Iberian language and writing found in the province of Tarragona up until December 2010, a total of 58 inscriptions. Part of this assemblage consists of previously published documents that have been revised and restudied in the light of our current knowledge of Iberian epigraphy. The new epigraphs are those that have been discovered in recent years or have been found in museums or other collections during fieldwork. New proposals are offered for the reading and interpretation of some of the previously known texts, as well as all the contextual data it has been possible to compile for each piece. It should be stressed that two of the counties in the province of Tarragona –Baix Ebre and Conca de Barberà– have not provided any Iberian documents. Those that have given us the largest number of inscriptions are Ribera d’Ebre (19) and Tarragonès (17). The most outstanding settlements are Castellet de Banyoles (Tivissa), Sant Miquel de Vinebre and Tarragona. In the case of Montsià county, of particular interest are the inscriptions from La Moleta del Remei (Alcanar) and Amposta. Also noteworthy is Vilar de Valls (Alt Camp), which has given us two singular epigraphs: a text of 29 symbols on a spindle and a piece of Attic ware with a reference to its owner, which may be the oldest piece in the studied area. Taking into account the material and typology of the media, the inscriptions can be categorised as follows: 32 pottery vessels, 11 stone items, 7 lead sheets, 5 silver vessels, 2 loom weights and a spindle. Among the pottery, the most common finds are Campanian B and B-oid. Information about the context of the find is often missing, as many of the pieces were moved from their original sites to be reused, discarded or placed in a collection and therefore we lack precise references. We know the original location of some of the epigraphs: a dwelling site, a hoard or a treasure (Tivissa) and the inscriptions on an interior wall of the Minerva Tower (Tarragona). Other more sporadic locations include circulation levels, caves and production areas. The most common purpose of an inscription, in keeping with the rest of the Iberian corpus, is the identification of the owner or recipient of the object (normally the pottery). A total of 25 pieces have been interpreted in this way. On the other hand, the inscriptions on lead sheets have been classified as administrative or commercial documents. Other functions about which we can be fairly certain are funerary inscriptions, indications of the manufacturer or producer (normally stamps) and dedications. As far as the chronology is concerned, examples of Iberian script begin to appear timidly in the 4th century BC and slowly increase throughout the following century. However, the highest percentage of inscriptions is found between the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 1st centuries BC, in other words during the Romanisation period. Continuing use of Iberian script is attested up to the beginning of the 1st century AD, particularly in Tarraco and Baix Camp county. In Tarraco these late-period documents are contemporary with the city’s first Latin inscriptions, although by the end of Augustus’ mandate, Latin had definitively replaced the indigenous script. http://hdl.handle.net/2072/256618
By the beginninh ot the 80s, several metallic and ceramic objects were exhumed and rifled from the Roman-Iberian site of Monteró (Camarassa, la Noguera) as a result of the illegal actions of some detectorists. In later years, a part of these pieces was donated to the IEI Numismatic Department or to the IEI Archaeology Section, whereas the other was only documented by photograph. The relevance of some of the items, despite the lack of archaeological context, has motivated the carrying out of the present study.

Some singular objects recovered in surface are announced in the sites Iberian and Roman of the Fogonussa, that they were remaining unpublished in the population of Sant Martí de Maldà, municipality of Sant Martí de Riucorb. The selection is formed by a brim of late Greco-Italic amphora that contains an Iberian inscription, two handles of Iberian containers with graphites and three handles of Iberian stamped amphora, one of them with the figure of a griphon.

[This study gathers all the Iberian inscriptions published either for the first time (or re-edited with significant changes) between 2007 and 2014. Although the succinct commentary focuses essentially on linguistic questions, it does not disregard aspects related to palaeographics, chronology and the choice of the medium. In fact, the aspect of medium serves as the base to classify the inscriptions into four groups: coins, stone, lead, and pottery.]

This paper aims to evaluate the epigraphic habit developed among the Ilergetes. In order to accomplish this task, I will first draw up a history of the research, paying special attention to the period between the publication of the MLH iii and the edition of the proceedings of this workshop. Secondly, I will review the media used and arrange them in different chronological phases. The final purpose is to draw a picture of the rhythm and characteristics in the adoption and development of the epigraphic habit.

NOVETATS EPIGRÀFIQUES IBÈRIQUES DELS SEGLES V-IV AC DEL MAS CASTELLAR (PONTÓS, ALT EMPORDÀ)This paper analyses eleven unpublished Iberian inscriptions from Mas Castellar (Pontós), seven on Attic pottery and the other on grey ceramic. Seven consist of only one sign, but the three longest inscriptions contain probable Iberian personal names without any morph added. One aspect that has to be pointed out is the stratigraphic chronology of the new pieces presented in this work, as they are among the oldest Iberian inscriptions. In particular, the Attic ceramics that have appeared among the rubble of a building abandoned in the last quarter of the five century BC, which makes it the oldest Iberian inscription for stratigraphic chronology, surpassed only by the inscriptions on Attic black-figure pottery from Ullastret, like C.2.30, with a typological chronology of the third quarter of the five century BC.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this work we study the inscription on a lead object found in the excavations of the Puig de Sant Andreu trench, but without a significant archaeological context. Although its content is not very clear, the facing arrangement of the lines points to some kind of votive, magical or sacred text. The most likely reading is babar • kikibi • isar / titibiaŕbibi, where the elements of the second line, titibi and aŕbibi, would be the most plausibly could be interpreted as personal names, perhaps by analogy also kikibi, while isar (is + ar) could being a new form of a pronominal paradigm and babar, perhaps it could be put in relation with (ban)baibar that is among the candidates for theonyms. The presence of four doublets of signs baba, kiki, titi and bibi far exceeds what would correspond to a text so short and perhaps also related to the cult function of the text.
[This paper offers an edition of five unpublished Iberian graffiti (three of them consist of a single letter but are of a certain importance for various reasons) and revises two lost pieces that have been rediscovered recently. It also presents some addenda to the last published reading of the Roques de Sant Formatge inscription. All these documents are conserved in Western Catalonia, although they come from a much broader area.]

[This paper sets out by determining the area of diffusion of those Iberian inscriptions that can be ascribed to the Ilergetes. Against this background, it provides a synthetic account of what can be known about the Iberian onomastic habits of this people, taking into account both epigraphic documents and literary sources.]
