When you hear the words ‘recruited’ or ‘working’ you probably think about legal, safe employment. However, these terms are used by those who groom and coerce children and young people into criminal activity such as moving money and drugs. When these terms are also used by the wider public and by safeguarding professionals it can reinforce this idea of ‘working’ and legitimise child criminal exploitation. In the latest edition of our Why Language Matters blog series, we explore how using terms like ‘recruited’ and ‘working’ minimise children’s experiences of criminal exploitation. By using clear language when talking about child criminal exploitation, professionals working with a child can build an accurate picture of their experience and identify support that meets their needs. Good quality assessments help us understand the lives of the children and families we work with. They play a vital role in identifying a family's existing or potential needs, strengths, risks and protective factors; they’re also central to deciding what actions, if any, are needed to safeguarding children. But what makes a good assessment? We’ve pulled together together common themes from case reviews and research into ten practice points, designed to help social workers reflect on what makes a good quality assessment. Take a look: https://buff.ly/3RStJM7 #SocialWork #Assessments
