From the 12th of July to the 4th of August, you can help assess the health of our environment by taking part in the Big Butterfly Count – a UK wide butterfly survey. 🦋 The Big Butterfly Count is more than just a quick snap-shot of how many of these important insects we see - it builds a picture of how populations fluctuate, enabling nature experts to understand how we can help butterfly populations stabilise and succeed. The results from thousands of people counting butterflies can also be combined with data from other species counts across each year, including for birds, bees and general insects, giving us an ever clearer picture of what happening with our wildlife, and how we can help. Simply count butterflies for 15 minutes during bright (preferably sunny) weather from your garden, local park, office or even your dog walk. Find out how to get involved on the Big Butterfly Count website. https://lnkd.in/eDPGh_n #bigbutterflycount #biodiversity

It’s National Meadows Day this Saturday, a great time to get out and enjoy your local meadow. Wildflower meadows look their best in summer when the flowers are in bloom. But they don’t just look lovely, they are an important resource for wildlife and food source for pollinators. Sadly meadows are in trouble. The majority of the UK’s ancient species-rich grasslands have been lost. Mitie landscapes are committed to reversing this decline with a range of nature recovery solutions. At Mitie Landscapes, we're working on innovative projects, such as our pilot study of flowering lawns in Leuchars, Scotland, and Dudley, West Midlands. These lawns, a blend of traditional manicured lawns and wildflower meadows, are designed to enhance local biodiversity. Our trials aim to understand how these flowering lawns can support bees and other pollinators by providing essential nectar and habitats. This not only helps plants to thrive but also supports a sustainable ecosystem for birds, bats, and other wildlife. We're excited to share the results of our study and demonstrate how small changes can make a big difference. Whether on small properties or larger estates, incorporating wildflower meadows and pollinator-friendly plants can create beautiful, resilient landscapes that support biodiversity. #NationalMeadowsDay #Biodiversity #Pollinators #WildflowerMeadows #Sustainability #MitieLandscapes

This week we’re celebrating The RoyalEntomological Society's #InsectWeek. Insects are a vital part of our ecosystem but populations are in decline nationally and globally, with some estimates suggesting we have seen a 78% decline in insect populations within the UK. But the good news is that insects and pollinators are often the first species to benefit from nature-positive landscapes; areas that have space for nature or are managed sympathetically for wildlife. Even the smallest of changes can make a big difference, for example seeding wildflower verges, putting in a native hedgerow or installing habitat boxes will support insects including pollinators such as bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. We are supporting Plantlife International’s #NoMowMay initiative. We are working with customers across the UK including schools, public spaces and communities to help boost biodiversity this Spring and Summer. The UK has lost 97% of flower-rich meadows since the 1930’s and with them vital food needed by pollinators, like bees and butterflies. By letting grass areas like verges grow long for May and into June smaller plants like clover, daisies, dandelions, selfheal and clover will get a chance to flower and give pollinators a headstart. Sunday marked World Wildlife Day, a good time to reflect on the importance of our coexistence with nature. Humans are intrinsically connected to nature, but the sad reality is we have often chosen to ignore it and not to consider the impact that our decisions have on the natural world. The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. Driven by the loss of our native habitats, including meadows, hedgerows, woodlands, and ponds, it impacts us in many ways including temperature regulation, water availability, crop fertilisation, and our health and wellbeing. Mitie Landscapes are working with our clients to help stop this decline with a range of nature recovery solutions such as the introduction of wildflower meadows, pollinators friendly shrubs and more complex solutions including habitat enhancement designed as part of Biodiversity Net Gain. These can be applied on small properties or scaled-up for larger more complex properties and portfolios. Making a change, no matter how small, will make a big difference to local biodiversity .
